The 1959 Texas Tech Red Raiders football team represented Texas Technological College—now known as Texas Tech University—as an independent during the 1959 NCAA University Division football season. In their ninth season under head coach DeWitt Weaver, the Red Raiders compiled a 4–6 record and were outscored by opponents by a combined total of 158 to 139. The team's statistical leaders included Ken Talkington with 603 passing yards, Carl Gatlin with 211 rushing yards, and Bake Turner with 444 receiving yards.2017 Media Guide, p. 158. DeWitt Weaver
DeWitt Thompson Weaver Sr. (May 11, 1912 – January 19, 1998) was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders from 1951 to 1960. He was the first head football coach at Texas Tech to win a bowl game during his first season—an accomplishment unmatched at Texas Tech until Tommy Tuberville's first season, in 2010. In 1956, he became the first college coach to defeat the Texas Longhorns in a season-opener in Austin. He amassed a 49–51–5 record. From 1952 to 1960, he also served as the athletic director at Texas Technological College, as Texas Tech University was then known. The Baylor–Texas Tech football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Baylor Bears and Texas Tech Red Raiders. Each school is a member of the Big 12 Conference. The rivalry began in 1929. The game has been played every year since 1956 despite the fact that Texas Tech was a member of the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In 1960, Texas Tech joined the Southwest Conference, ensuring the rivalry would continue. In 1996, the Southwest Conference dissolved, and both teams were invited, along with the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies, with former members of the Big Eight Conference to form the Big 12 Conference. War Memorial Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas. The stadium is primarily used for American football and is the home stadium for the Catholic High School Rockets, the Parkview Magnet High School Patriots, and the secondary home stadium for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. 1959 Arkansas Razorbacks Football Team
The 1959 Arkansas Razorbacks football team represented the University of Arkansas in the Southwest Conference (SWC) during the 1959 NCAA University Division football season. In their second year under head coach Frank Broyles, the Razorbacks compiled a 9–2 record (5–1 against SWC opponents), finished in a tie with Texas for the SWC championship, and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 163 to 101. The Razorbacks' only losses came against Texas by a 13–12 score and to Mississippi by a 28–0 score. The team was ranked #9 in both the final AP Poll and the final UPI Coaches Poll and went on to defeat Georgia Tech in the 1960 Gator Bowl by a 14–7 score. The Houston–Texas Tech football rivalry is a college football rivalry between the Cougars from Houston and The Red Raiders from Texas Tech. The rivalry dates back to 1951 from the old Southwest Conference. Series history Historically, Texas Tech University was one of Houston's original rivals, playing every year from 1976 to 1995 when both schools were part of the now-defunct Southwest Conference.
