1958 VFL Grand Final
The 1958 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Collingwood Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 20 September 1958. It was the 61st annual grand final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1958 VFL season. The match, attended by 97,956 spectators, was won by Collingwood by 18 points, marking that club's 13th premiership victory. It was Melbourne's fifth successive grand final appearance. The Demons had won the previous three premierships and were looking to equal Collingwood's 1927–1930 record (which still stands) of four consecutive premierships. Peter Lucas (footballer)
Peter Lucas (23 November 1929 – 16 September 2019) was an Australian rules footballer, who played for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Peter Lucas was a regular half back flanker in the Collingwood team. His 177 VFL games between 1949 and 1959 included the winning 1958 Grand Final against Melbourne. Ken Smale
Ken Smale (born 5 November 1933) is a former Australian rules footballer, who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Born in Warrnacknabeal Smale played as a forward for the town team and he won the Wimmera Football League goalkicking award in 1952 and 1953. Keen to have a go in the VFL he wrote to Collingwood asking for a try out. He spent the Easter Saturday in Melbourne with a six-game permit in case he was wanted. Collingwood was impressed and he got a clearance. Thorold Merrett
Thorold Merrett (born 30 September 1933) is a former Australian rules footballer, who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Footballer From the Victorian country town Cobden, Merrett was a small footballer who was a keen Richmond fan who wanted to play league football for the Tigers. At 16 years of age, Merrett was rejected by Richmond legend Jack Dyer because of his light frame, but he was given another opportunity at Victoria Park, where he stood out in a set of practice games for Collingwood just before the 1950 season. It was initially thought by followers and players that he would be 'killed' because of his size (168 cm, 59 kg). He made his debut for Collingwood in 1950. Barry Harrison
Barry 'Hooker' Harrison (21 December 1935 – 20 September 2004) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood and North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Harrison, a ruckman, was known for his aggressive style of play. He spent the 1954 and 1955 seasons with the reserves and then joined the Navy as part of his national service which delayed his senior debut until 1958. Graeme Fellowes
Graeme Fellowes (29 January 1934 – 24 January 2013) was a professional Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s and early 1960s. After managing just eight games in his first three home and away seasons, Fellowes burst onto the scene in the 1958 finals series. He came on the field in the Semi Final against Melbourne Football Club as 19th man and the tall and lanky ruckman dominated, cementing his spot in the side for the rest of September including the 1958 premiership. Fellowes was a regular for the following two seasons before his knee began to fail him, eventually ending his career in 1964. Ken Bennett (Australian Rules Footballer)
Kenneth Raymond Bennett (14 February 1940 – 1 September 2023) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Bennett, originally from Dandenong, was just 17 years old when he debuted midway through the 1957 season. Although primarily a wingman he was also used up forward and was a member of Collingwood's 1958 VFL Grand Final premiership team. Bennett kicked two goals and featured in their best players in Collingwood's 1958 premiership. In 1963, Bennett (Albury) won the 1963 Ovens & Murray Football League best and fairest award, the Morris Medal, with 17 votes, from John Perry (Wodonga) and Graeme Leydin (Wangaratta Rovers), both on 16 votes. Ian Brewer
Ian Davidson Brewer (15 June 1936 – 15 April 2010) was an Australian rules footballer with a distinguished career between 1956 and 1970, in the three major leagues of his era: the Victorian Football League (VFL), West Australian National Football League (WANFL) and South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Brewer played a combined total of 171 senior games for Collingwood, Claremont and Norwood. A key forward from Sale, Brewer played with Collingwood from 1956 to 1961. He kicked 73 goals in 1958, which earned him the Coleman Medal. This tally included six goals in the Queen's Birthday clash against Melbourne, in front of a record crowd of 99,346. Mick Twomey
Michael John Twomey (25 September 1931 – 14 December 2015) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). At 185cm (6'1") in height, Collingwood's Mick Twomey was taller than his brothers Bill and Pat. Recruited from Yarra Valley, he played most of his 157 VFL games between 1951 and 1961 as a ruckman. In fact he was short for a ruckman; but he had remarkable spring, and newspapers often carried photos of him seeming to soar over opponents. Bill Serong
Bill Serong (born 5 May 1936) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood and North Melbourne in the VFL. He went to the Christian Brothers' College in Victoria Parade, and was the Australian handball champion in 1974, aged 38. Football Serong usually played as a centreman but was also seen on the half forward flanks. He made his league debut in 1956 with Collingwood and played in their 1958 premiership side as well as two losing grand finals with the club. In 1959 he placed equal second in the Brownlow Medal count. He finished his career with a season at North Melbourne in 1962, winning their best and fairest award. He was captain-coach of Echuca in the 1963 and 1964 Bendigo Football League seasons. Serong won the 1965 - Bendigo FL best and fairest award, the Michelsen Medal. Murray Weideman
Murray Weideman (16 February 1936 – 17 February 2021) was an Australian rules footballer in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). He died one day after his 85th birthday. Personal life The son of George Oliver and Hazel Howard Weideman (née Start), and the younger brother of pharmacist/parliamentarian Graeme Weideman, George "Graeme" Weideman, he was born on 16 February 1936. He died on 18 February 2021. Weideman's son Mark Weideman also played for West Adelaide (SANFL) and Collingwood; and his grandson, Sam Weideman, plays for Essendon Football Club, Essendon. Brian Beers
Brian Beers (born 31 January 1939) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood and Fitzroy in the VFL. Family He is the father of Mark Beers and Tony Beers, who both also played for Collingwood. Football Collingwood (VFL) A half forward, Beers was a member of Collingwood's 1958 premiership team and kicked two goals in the grand final. In 1959 he kicked a career high 28 goals for the year and the following season he played in the Collingwood side which lost the 1960 Grand Final.
