The 1958 San Francisco 49ers season was the team's ninth in the NFL. The team had an 8–4 record the previous season. During a four-game road trip, the 49ers only won one game and finished with a 6–6 record, 4th place in the NFL Western Division. Each of the team's quarterbacks, Y. A. Tittle and John Brodie, started six of the twelve games and ended the season with similar statistics. Eastern And Western Conferences (NFL) 1933–1969
The Eastern and Western Divisions of the National Football League, renamed the American and National Conferences in 1950 and then the Eastern and Western Conferences in 1953, were organized as a result of the 1932 NFL season#Championship race, disputed NFL championship of 1932. NFL owners agreed that henceforth there would be an annual NFL Championship, championship game, to be played between the teams with the best records from two divisions, Eastern and Western. The two-division/conference structure remained essentially stable for over 35 years, including the absorption of former All-America Football Conference teams in 1950, and the early expansion teams added in the 1960s in response to the American Football League. With the 1970 AFL–NFL merger the new, larger league was reorganized. Tackle is a playing position in gridiron football. Historically, in the one-platoon system prevalent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a tackle played on both offense and defense. In the modern system of specialized units, offensive tackle and defensive tackle are separate positions, and the stand-alone term "tackle" refers to the offensive tackle position only. The offensive tackle (OT, T) is a position on the offensive line, left and right. Like other offensive linemen, their job is to block: to physically keep defenders away from the offensive player who has the football and enable him to advance the football and eventually score a touchdown. Leon Burton
Walter Leon Burton (March 13, 1935 – October 7, 2022) was an American professional football player who played 14 games for the New York Titans in one season of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960. He earlier played college football at Arizona State University. Early life Burton was born in Flint, Michigan, on March 13, 1935. He attended Flint Northern High School in his hometown, where he was a member of the football and track and field teams. He then studied at Arizona State University, where he played for the Sun Devils from 1955 to 1958. He established the school's freshman record with 694 rushing yards in 1955 (a mark that would stand until 2003). During the 1957 season, Burton led the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in rushing yards (1126), touchdowns (16), points (96), and yards from scrimmage (1320), while setting an NCAA record of 9.6 yards per carry. Henry Schmidt (American Football)
Henry Joseph (Hank) Schmidt (September 28, 1935 – May 17, 2021) was an American professional football player who was a defensive tackle in the American Football League (AFL). Professional career Schmidt played collegiately at the University of Southern California and professionally between 1959 and 1966, starting with the National Football League's San Francisco 49ers and moving to the new American Football League's San Diego Chargers in 1961. He played on the Buffalo Bills 1965 AFL Champions in 1965, earning a place in that year's AFL All-Star Team. He finished his professional football career in 1966 with the AFL's New York Jets. In gridiron football, defensive backs (DBs), also called the secondary, are the players on the defensive side of the ball who play farthest back from the line of scrimmage. They are distinguished from the other two sets of defensive players, the defensive linemen who play directly on the line of scrimmage, and the linebackers, who play in the middle of the defense, between the defensive line and the defensive backs. Billy Atkins (American Football)
William Ellis Atkins (November 19, 1934 – November 5, 1991) was an American football defensive back and punter from Auburn University who played for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League, and in the American Football League for the Buffalo Bills, the New York Titans/Jets, and the Denver Broncos. He was an AFL All-Star in 1961. On January 8, 1966, Atkins was named the head coach of the Troy State Trojans football team. In 1968, he coached Troy State to an NAIA National Championship and was named the NAIA Coach of the Year. Atkins finished at Troy State with a 44–16–2 record before leaving in 1971. He is the second-most winningest coach in Troy history, only behind Larry Blakeney. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are a professional Canadian football team based in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
