1955 Toronto Municipal Election
Municipal elections were held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on December 5, 1955. Incumbent mayor Nathan Phillips (politician), Nathan Phillips, elected a year earlier, was easily reelected, defeating Controller Roy E. Nathan Phillips (politician)
Nathan Phillips (November 7, 1892 – January 7, 1976) was a Canadian politician who served as the 53rd mayor of Toronto from 1955 to 1962. A lawyer by training, Phillips was first elected to Toronto City Council in 1926. He is the city's first Jewish mayor, ending an unbroken string of Protestant mayors. Early life Born in Brockville, Ontario, the son of Jacob Phillips and Mary Rosenbloom, he was educated in public and high schools in Cornwall, Ontario. In 1908, he articled with the Cornwall lawyer, Robert Smith, who later would be named to the Supreme Court of Canada. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1913 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1914. He practised law in Toronto and was appointed a King's Counsel in 1929. He was an honorary member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2311, the Maple Leaf Aerie. Ford Brand
Ford Brand (1904July 29, 1986) was a Canadian politician who was a one-time rival to Toronto mayor Nathan Phillips. Ford had a seat on the Toronto Board of Control, the municipality's executive body, from 1951 to 1958 and also an inaugural member of the Metropolitan Toronto Council from the 1954 election until 1958. In the 1958 Toronto municipal election he challenged incumbent mayor Nathan Phillips, but lost by 20,000 votes. He then served two five-year terms as a member of the Toronto Transit Commission's board before retiring in 1970. Career He was a pressman by trade, working for Garden City Press in the 1930s, and specializing in colour covers. A trade unionist, he was president of the Toronto Labour Council in the 1940s, and then the labour council's secretary when he was elected to the Board of Control in 1951, after having been unsuccessful the year before. William Dennison (Canadian Politician)
William Donald Dennison (January 20, 1905 – May 2, 1981) was a Canadian social-democratic politician that served in both the Ontario Legislative Assembly and finally as the City of Toronto's mayor. He served two nonconsecutive terms as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in the 1940s and early 1950s. After his provincial-level career, he focused on Toronto's municipal politics, holding offices as an alderman, member of the Toronto Board of Control, and finally as the city's mayor. He was the mayor from 1967 to 1972, winning two consecutive three-year terms. Prior to entering politics, he was a school principal and teacher. Rosedale is a neighbourhood in central Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Regent Park
Regent Park is a neighbourhood located in downtown Toronto, Ontario built in the late 1940s as a public housing project managed by Toronto Community Housing. It sits on what used to be a significant part of the Cabbagetown neighbourhood and is bounded by Gerrard Street East to the north, River Street to the east, Shuter Street to the south and Parliament Street to the west. Regent Park's residential dwellings, prior to the ongoing redevelopment, were entirely social housing and covered all of the 69 acres (280,000 m²) which comprise the community. The original neighbourhood was razed in the process of creating Regent Park. Frederick J. Beavis (October 8, 1914 – July 11, 1997) was a longtime city councillor in Toronto, Ontario, who briefly served as interim mayor of the city in 1978. Beavis operated the ''Beavis Bros. Riverdale is a large neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is bounded by the Don River Valley to the west, Danforth Avenue and Greektown to the north, Jones Avenue, the CN/ GO tracks, Leslieville to the east, and Lake Shore Boulevard to the south.
