The governing Liberal Party of Prince Edward Island, Liberals of Premier (Canada), Premier Alexander Wallace Matheson, Alex W. Matheson increased their majority government, majority in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, Legislature, winning three more seats over the Official Opposition, opposition Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island, Progressive Conservatives led by Reginald Bell, who would resign as leader in 1957 following this election. Matheson took over as premier from his predecessor John Walter Jones, J. Walter Jones in May 1953 following his appointment to the Senate of Canada, Senate. Lorne Bonnell
Mark Lorne Bonnell (January 4, 1923 – October 9, 2006) was a Canadian physician, provincial politician and senator. Born in Hopefield, Prince Edward Island, the son of Lottie and Harry Bonnell, he received his Doctor of Medicine from Dalhousie University in 1949. He practiced medicine in Murray River. In 1951, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island representing the district of 4th Kings. A member of the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party, he was re-elected in 1955, 1959, 1962, 1966, and 1970. He was the Minister of Health, Minister of Welfare, Minister Tourist Development, and Minister Responsible for Housing. His grandfather, Mark Bonnell, was also a member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. William Keir Clark (May 30, 1910 – November 28, 2010) was a Canadian merchant and political figure in Prince Edward Island. Joseph John Campbell (March 26, 1904 – October 30, 1987) was an American writer. He was a professor of literature at Sarah Lawrence College who worked in comparative mythology and comparative religion. His work covers many aspects of the human experience. Campbell's best-known work is his book ''The Hero with a Thousand Faces'' (1949), in which he discusses his theory of the journey of the archetypal hero shared by world mythologies, termed the monomyth. The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island is one of three major political parties on Prince Edward Island. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. Leo Rossiter
Leo Francis Rossiter (January 15, 1923 – October 25, 1996) was a merchant, realtor and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 2nd Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1955 to 1981 as a Progressive Conservative. He was born in Morell, Prince Edward Island, the son of J. Edward Rossiter and Catherine Clarkin, and was educated at Saint Dunstan's University. Rossiter operated a general store and sold farm equipment. In 1946, he married Anna Pierce. He served in the province's Executive Council as Minister of Natural Resources, Minister of Fisheries, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Provincial Secretary. After retiring from politics, Rossiter served as chair of the Workman's Compensation Board. He also served as chair of the Morell Village Commission.
