1955 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1955 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1954–55 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 8th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 10 and 12, 1955, and concluded with Michigan defeating Colorado College 5–3. All games were played at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Qualifying teams Four teams qualified for the tournament, two each from the eastern and western regions. The two best WIHL teams and a Tri-State League representative received bids into the tournament as did one independent school. Format The eastern team judged as better was seeded as the top eastern team while the WIHL champion was given the top western seed. Broadmoor World Arena (1938)
The Broadmoor World Arena was a skating rink and hockey arena located at The Broadmoor Resort & Spa in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Originally an outdoor equestrian center and riding academy, the building was enclosed and converted into an ice arena which opened in January 1938. It was the original home of the Colorado College Tigers hockey team, as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club, a major force in the figure skating community. The building served as the first home of the NCAA Hockey Championships, hosting the first ten Final Fours (1948–1957) and once more, in 1969. The arena served as host to the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in 1962. It also hosted the World Figure Skating Championships five times between 1957 and 1975. Neil Buchanan (ice Hockey)
Neil Buchanan (born 11 October 1956) is an English artist, photographer, and musician, best known for his work on British children's television. During his tenure as a children's television presenter, he hosted the CITV programme ''Art Attack'', a television program that he co-created, during its original run from 1990 to 2007, as well as ''Finders Keepers'' and ''It's a Mystery'', while he also produced and starred in CITV's ''ZZZap!''. Early life Buchanan was born in 1956 in Aintree, which was then in the county of Lancashire. Phil Hilton
Phil Hilton is a Canadian retired ice hockey defenseman who was the Most Outstanding Player for the 1955 NCAA tournament. Career Hilton ended his junior career with his home town Brandon Wheat Kings in 1952 and immediately jumped into the college hockey ranks. He appeared as a freshman for Colorado College (a rarity at the time) and tried to build on CC's runner-up finish the year before. Unfortunately the Tigers halved the win total and finished towards the bottom of the conference standings. The team started to recover in Hilton's second season, a year that saw him being named to the All-WIHL Second Team. In his final year with the team, Hilton helped Colorado College finish atop the league standings and earn the top seed in the NCAA tournament. Bernie McKinnon
Bernie McKinnon was a Canadian ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer and tennis coach for St. Lawrence for over 30 years. He was the head coach both men's and women's teams for most sports as well as for freshman teams when varsity status was limited to three years. Career Bernie McKinnon arrived at Canton in 1953, playing for the freshman ice hockey team before joining the elite varsity squad for the 1954–55 season. McKinnon helps the Saints to a 19-win season and their second NCAA tournament appearance. After a disappointing 4th place finish McKinnon's Saints found themselves back in the tournament in 1956, narrowly losing in overtime to eventual champion Michigan before soundly defeating Boston College in the consolation game. Edward Bliss (ice Hockey)
Edward Lydston Bliss (, December 10, 1865 – January 22, 1960) was a medical missionary who worked in China from 1892 to 1932. Coming from a religious family, Bliss originally sought to become a minister. After giving up these aspirations, he attended Yale University and became a teacher. He then went to medical school and began his career as a physician in China. During his time in Shaowu, located in the Fujian province of China, Bliss provided general care and also performed research on the rinderpest virus. He remained in China throughout many significant political conflicts throughout the early 1900s before returning to the United States in 1932. Brian McFarlane (born August 10, 1931) is a Canadian television sportscaster and author. He is also the Honorary President of the Society for International Hockey Research. He is the son of writer Leslie McFarlane. He is best known as a broadcaster on Hockey Night In Canada and as an author of hockey books. Biography Early life and career Brian McFarlane was raised in Whitby and Ottawa Ontario. He attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, on a hockey scholarship, graduating in 1955. In his four years he scored 101 goals for the Skating Saints, which remains a St. Lawrence record. On three occasions, he scored five goals in a game, a school record shared with several others. Dr. William Sloan is a Canadian retired ice hockey goaltender who previous had the most career wins in NCAA history. Career Bill Sloan arrived in Canton, New York in the fall of 1952, less than 60 miles from his home town, and immediately made the varsity squad at St. Lawrence. Despite the NCAA's rules limiting athletes to three years of eligibility at the time, the Larries were in need of a goalie and Sloan fit the bill. He helped SLU to a 12–6 record in his first season, earning the first shutout for the Saints in five years. The following year Sloan improved mightily, finishing the year with an 18–3–1 record and helped the Saints tie for the Tri-State League championship. Ed Zifcak is an American retired ice hockey left winger who was an AHCA Second team all-american for St. Lawrence. Career Zifcak was a star player for the Burrillville Broncos as a junior player and his scoring punch garnered him an athletic scholarship with St. Lawrence University. He started playing for the varsity team in 1952, just after the team made its first NCAA tournament appearance. The Saints were a decent team in his first year with the squad but it was in his second year that the team began to dominate their competition. The Saints finished the year with an 18–3–1 record and tied for the Tri-State League championship. However, a loss at the end of the year to co-champion Rensselaer proved costly and the Bachelors received a tournament bid instead of the Saints.
