Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Ståle Wikshåland
Ståle Wikshåland (30 June 1953 – 18 January 2017) was a Norwegian musicologist. He was born in Stavanger. Wikshåland was a co-editor for the music magazine ''Ballade'', and worked for Henie Onstad Kunstsenter from 1981 to 1984. From 1988 to 2017 he was appointed professor in musicology at the University of Oslo. He was also a music critic for ''Dagbladet'' for thirty years, and contributed to the contemporary debate on music and art in society. Wikshåland died in 2017 of thrombosis, aged 63. Bergen Woodwind Quintet
The Bergen Woodwind Quintet is a well-known woodwind quintet based in Bergen, Norway. The ensemble's members are the principal wind musicians of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, also known as Harmonien, which was founded in 1765 and is one of the world's oldest orchestral institutions. The quintet often conducts worldwide tours, performing for live audiences, conducting radio broadcasts, and holding master classes for music students. Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra
The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra is a Norwegian orchestra based in Bergen. Its principal concert venue is the Grieg Hall. History Established in 1765 under the name ''Det Musicalske Selskab'' (The Musical Society), it later changed its name to ''Musikselskabet Harmonien''. Bergen citizens often refer to the ensemble as "Harmonien" (the Harmony). After World War I, there was strong interest in the major Norwegian cities of Bergen and Kristiania (later Oslo) in having larger orchestras. In 1919, the orchestra in Bergen was reorganized to employ 40 professional full-time musicians. As of 2015, the orchestra has 101 musicians. The orchestra has had a long tradition of playing contemporary music. Ludwig van Beethoven's second symphony was performed in Bergen in the year it was published, 1804, even before it was performed in Berlin. Geir Johnson (13 June 1953 – 16 September 2021) was a composer, writer and initiator of culture projects living at Nesodden outside Oslo. He was born in Fredrikstad, and received his first musical training as a soprano soloist in boys' choirs in Oslo, followed by music training in piano and singing, as well as choral conducting studies with Knut Nystedt. His own performance career spanned from many years of choral conducting, via a short career as singer and keyboard player in a rock band, to performance artist in a multi-artist collective titled The TRASH Ensemble. Education Johnson studied musicology, philosophy and social sciences at the University of Oslo and University of Bergen, receiving his Ph.D. in 1983. Erik Balke (born 7 November 1953) Store Norske Leksikon is a Norwegian jazz musician (saxophone), known as leader of the "Lille Frøen Saksofonkvartett" with Vidar Johansen, Arne Frang and Odd Riisnæs/Tore Brunborg/ Olav Dale, as member of his younger brother Jon Balke's early orchestras, and for cooperations with Don Cherry, Ed Blackwell, Per Jørgensen, Audun Kleive, Nils Petter Molvær, Torbjørn Sunde, Tore Brunborg, Paolo Vinaccia, and Bugge Wesseltoft. Stein Erik Tafjord
Stein Erik Tafjord (born 2 November 1953 in Langevåg, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician (tuba), and brother of the French horn player Runar Tafjord. He is most well known for being part of The Brazz Brothers. He was also one of the founders Ytre Suløens Jass Ensemble in 1973, where he played for 17 years. He has four children, and between them are the hornplayer Hild Sofie Tafjord. Career Tafjord is a graduate of Norges Musikkhøgskole i Oslo. After many years as participant of the Kringkastingsorkesteret, he started as a freelance jazz and studio musician. Tafjord has developed a very unconventional style of playing as improviser, which has had an influence on composers and others musicians, to be more aware of the tuba as instrument. Stein-Erik Olsen
Stein-Erik Olsen (born 8 September 1953) is a Norwegian classical guitarist and professor of guitar at the University of Bergen, known from collaborations with such as Gro Sandvik, Roar Engelberg and St Martin in the Fields and a series of recordings. Career Olsen is a graduate of the Bergen Musikkonservatorium, the Norwegian Academy of Music and Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique. He has also studied under Per-Olof Johnson and Manuel Barrucco. Since 1992 Olsen has been Professor at the Bergen Musikkonservatorium, from 1995 the Grieg Academy, University of Bergen. Sigurd Ulveseth
Sigurd Ulveseth (born 13 July 1953) is a Norwegian jazz musician (Upright bass) and Orchestra leader, known from a number of album releases. Career Ulveseth was born in Bergen. With his own quartet, he has released three albums. The band consists of Adam Nussbaum (drums), Knut Riisnæs (saxophone), and Dag Arnesen (piano). He is also part of "Marit Sandvik Band", the band "SWAP" with Jan Gunnar Hoff, "North West Quartet" with Frode Nymo among others.
