Cairo ( ; ar, القاهرة, al-Qāhirah, ) is the capital of Egypt and its largest city, home to 10 million people. Karen Vilhelmine Lachmann (30 May 1916 – 30 September 1962) was a Danish fencer. Ellen Müller-Preis, née Preis, (6 May 1912 – 18 November 2007) was German-born Austrian Olympic-champion foil (fencing), foil fencing, fencer. In 1949, she was named Austrian female athlete of the year. Fencing career Preis was born in Berlin, and was Jewish. She moved to Vienna at the age of 18 in 1930, and began receiving fencing instruction from her aunt. In under two years she came in third in the FIE World Championships in Fencing, European Championships in Vienna. She later married Dr. Müller and had two sons and a daughter, who died from whooping cough. World and National Championships She won three world championships (1947, 1949, and 1950) and numerous national Austrian titles (17). In 1949 Müller-Preis was named the first ever "Austrian Female Athlete of the Year." Senior Colonel Per Hjalmar Ludvig Carleson (11 July 1917 – 8 June 2004) was a Swedish officer and épée fencer. Carleson was one of the founders of the Swedish Coastal Rangers. Early life Carleson was born on 11 July 1917 in Stockholm, Sweden, the son of captain Waldemar Carleson and his wife Gunnila (née Unge). He grew up in Stockholm with four brothers. Early attention was paid to his great interest and aptitude for swimming. Dario Mangiarotti
Dario Mangiarotti (18 December 1915 – 9 April 2010) was an Italian fencer who competed at the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympics and medaled in seven World Championships. He was born in Milan, the son of Giuseppe Mangiarotti, a fencer at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. He was also the brother of Edoardo Mangiarotti, Italy's most successful Olympian and the winner of more Olympic and World titles than any fencer in history, and Mario Mangiarotti, who was also a fencer. Biography He was taught the sport of fencing by his father and first became the individual Italian épée champion in 1936, a title that he would claim again in 1938, 1940, 1946, 1951, and 1953.
