1949 Sun Bowl
The 1949 Sun Bowl was a college football postseason bowl game between the 1948 Texas Mines Miners football team, Texas Mines Miners and the 1948 West Virginia Mountaineers football team, West Virginia Mountaineers. Background Controversy surrounded this game before it was played. In late November, the independent 1948 Lafayette Leopards football team, Lafayette Leopards of Easton, Pennsylvania, were invited to play in the Sun Bowl against Texas Mines, the second-place team in the Border Conference, under the condition that their star halfback, David Showell, an African-American, did not play. Four days later, Lafayette rejected the bid. West Virginia was selected to play against the Miners. The Lafayette–Texas Mines contest that was not held is referred to as "The Greatest Game They Never Played", which was turned into a song. Jack Curtice
Jack Camp "Cactus Jack" Curtice Jr. (May 24, 1907 – August 19, 1982) was an American football coach and college athletics administrator. Curtice served as the head football coach West Texas A&M Buffaloes football, West Texas State (1940–1941), UTEP Miners football, Texas Western (1946–1949), Utah Utes football, Utah (1950–1957), Stanford Cardinal football, Stanford (1958–1962), and UC Santa Barbara Gauchos football, UC Santa Barbara (1962–1969). His teams were known for their passing offenses. His overall record was 135–115–8. Early years Curtice was born in Glasgow, Kentucky, in 1907. Sun Bowl
The Sun Bowl is a college football bowl game that has been played since 1935 in the southwestern United States at El Paso, Texas. Along with the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl, it is the second-oldest bowl game in the country, behind the Rose Bowl. Usually held near the end of December, games are played at the Sun Bowl stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso. David Showell
David Anthony Showell (October 14, 1924 – December 23, 1955) was an American fighter pilot during the Second World War in one of the all-black Tuskegee Airmen squadrons. After the war he was a prominent player for Lafayette College during the 1948 and 1949 football seasons. The Sun Bowl Committee's decision to exclude Showell from the game due to his race led to Lafayette's rejection of its Sun Bowl invitation and subsequent student protests at the college. Early life David Showell was born on October 14, 1924. Showell and his eight siblings spent their childhood at 816 Madison Avenue in Prospect Park, Pennsylvania. During his childhood and adolescent years, Showell attended Lincoln Elementary School, Washington Junior High, and Prospect Park High where he played baseball and football. The 1948 Lafayette Leopards football team was an American football team that represented Lafayette College during the 1948 college football season. In its second season under head coach Ivy Williamson, the team compiled a 7–2 record and outscored its opponents by a total of 277 to 171. The team declined an invitation to the 1949 Sun Bowl, as African-American running back David Showell would not have been allowed to play in the game. Lafayette was ranked at No. 80 in the final Litkenhous Difference by Score System ratings for 1948. The team played its home games at Fisher Field in Easton, Pennsylvania.
