1948 Santa Clara Broncos Football Team
The 1948 Santa Clara Broncos football team was an American football team that represented Santa Clara University as an independent during the 1948 college football season. In their third season under head coach Len Casanova, the Broncos compiled a 7–2–1 record and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 228 to 153. They played a schedule that included elite programs of the era, defeating Oklahoma and Stanford and playing a tie against Michigan State. (Oklahoma won 31 straight games after the loss to Santa Clara.) Santa Clara's sole losses in 1948 were to California and No. 10 SMU featuring Doak Walker. Santa Clara was ranked at No. 26 in the final Litkenhous Difference by Score System ratings for 1948. Len Casanova
Leonard Joseph Casanova (June 12, 1905 – September 30, 2002) was an American football and baseball player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Santa Clara University (1946–1949), the University of Pittsburgh (1950), and the University of Oregon (1951–1966), compiling a career college football record of 104–94–11. Casanova was also the head baseball coach at Santa Clara from 1940 to 1942, tallying a mark of 39–25. After retiring from coaching, he served as the athletic director at Oregon. Casanova was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1977. Early life Casanova was born to Swiss-American immigrants, John and Marie Ursula Casanov on June 12, 1905 on a ranch in the Grizzly Bluff area near Ferndale, California. Ratcliffe Stadium
Ratcliffe Stadium is a collegiate athletic venue in the western United States, located on the campus of Fresno City College in Fresno, California. Opened in 1926, it was renamed in 1941 after their first football coach, Emory Ratcliffe. The stadium hosted the Raisin Bowl and was home to the Fresno State Bulldogs football team through 1979; they moved to their on-campus Bulldog Stadium in 1980. Ratcliffe also hosted the West Coast Relays, a major track and field competition. Today, local high school football games and various track and field events are still held there. The 1948 Nevada Wolf Pack football team was an American football team that represented the University of Nevada as an independent during the 1948 college football season. In its second season under head coach Joe Sheeketski, the Wolf Pack compiled a 9–2 record, outscored opponents 480 to 133, and lost to Villanova 27–7 in the Harbor Bowl at San Diego. Though unranked in the final AP Poll, Nevada was ranked at No. 15 in the final Litkenhous Difference by Score System ratings for 1948. Stan Heath and Alva Tabor played quarterback for Nevada this season. Tabor was one of the first African-Americans to play quarterback for a major college football team. Gilmore Stadium
Gilmore Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Los Angeles, California. It was opened in May 1934 and demolished in 1952, when the land was used to build CBS Television City. The stadium held 18,000. It was located next to Gilmore Field. The stadium was located west of Curson Avenue, surrounded by Beverly Boulevard, Fairfax Avenue and Third Street.
