1947–48 United States Network Television Schedule (weekday)
The 1947–48 United States network television schedule was nominally from September 1947 to March 1948, but scheduling ideas were still being worked out and did not follow modern standards. The schedule is followed by a list per network of returning series, new series, and series cancelled after the 1946–47 season. Only NBC and DuMont had networks until CBS joined in May 1948, and coaxial cable connections were only available for a few cities on the East Coast. Most other parts of the United States created local shows or broadcast film programs. Although fewer than twenty television stations were in operation at the end of 1947, more than 30 began broadcasting in 1948. New series and those making their network debuts are highlighted in bold, while series that ended during the season are highlighted in ''italics''. The Swift Show
''The Swift Show'' is an American variety/game show that aired on Thursdays at 8:30pm EST on NBC premiering April 1, 1948 and running to 1949. Overview The series, sponsored by the Swift & Company meat packing company, was mainly a musical variety show hosted by Lanny Ross, although during its first few months, it also featured a quiz show segment. Guest stars included Eileen Barton, Frank Fontaine, Max Showalter, and Susan Shaw. For the first five months, a quiz show segment was included. In September 1948, the show became "Lanny's penthouse with his girlfriend Eileen Barton visiting". In March 1949, the show reverted to a purely musical variety show. The ''CBS Evening News'' is the flagship evening television news program of CBS News, the news division of the CBS television network in the United States. The ''CBS Evening News'' is a daily evening broadcast featuring news reports, feature stories and interviews by CBS News correspondents and reporters covering events around the world. The program has been broadcast since July 1, 1941, under the original title ''CBS Television News'', eventually adopting its current title in 1963. ''Quizzing the News'' was an American game show which aired on American Broadcasting Company, ABC between August 11, 1948, and March 5, 1949, at 8:00 PM on Monday nights. Premise Three panelists had to identify events in the news based on spoken clues and drawings. Master of ceremonies Alan Prescott provided the words, and cartoonist Albee Tribler created the sketches, Panelists included Mary Wickes, Robert Garland, Hope Emerson, and Joan Lloyd. People viewing the program on TV also had an opportunity to take part and win prizes. Production The series was produced by Robert Brenner Productions, with Brenner as the producer, Tom DeHuff was the director, and Milton Subotsky was the writer. Walter J. Kiernan (January 25, 1902 – January 8, 1978) was an American radio, television, and print journalist and author, as well as television game show host during the early days of the medium. Career Walter Kiernan began his career as a journalist in New Haven in the early 1920s as a feature writer for the Elm City (Conn.) Clarion and the New Haven (Conn.) Union. He was a writer and editor of the New Haven Register from 1926 to 1928. He wrote for ''The Saturday Evening Post'' and started ''The Town Crier'' newspaper of West Haven, Connecticut in 1930. Kiernan was an Associated Press (AP) correspondent from 1928–29 and joined the now long since defunct International News Service (INS) as manager of its Hartford bureau in 1937. ''News and Views'' was an early American evening news program. Broadcast on ABC from 1948 to 1951, it was ABC's first evening news program and one of the first such programs on any television network; Both CBS and NBC also initiated their evening news programs (respectively '' CBS Television News'' and ''Camel News Caravan'', called ''Camel Newsreel Theatre'' at first) that same year, both debuting a few months before the first broadcast of ''News and Views'' on August 11, 1948. The co-anchors (not called that, as that meaning of "anchor" was not yet extant) were H. R. Baukhage and Jim Gibbons. Baukhage was a veteran radio broadcaster whose staccato baritone and gruff and abrupt sign-on, "Baukhage talking", was familiar to radio listeners of that era. Jim Gibbons was less well known. ''The Ed Sullivan Show'' is an American television variety show that ran on CBS from June 20, 1948, to March 28, 1971, and was hosted by New York entertainment columnist Ed Sullivan. ''Television Playhouse'' is a half-hour American anthology series that was broadcast live on NBC. The series aired from December 4, 1947 to April 11, 1948, generally appearing every third Sunday during its run. The program was in cooperation with the National Theater and Academy, a federally sponsored theater group, and featured live performances of plays, some of which were by well-known authors. The first presentation was ''The Last of My Solid Gold Watches'' by Tennessee Williams. Each episode featured actors and actresses who had not reached stardom. A wide variety of plays was presented on the program. Although short-lived, the "live play" format later became very popular during the early 1950s. ''Hollywood Screen Test'' is an American talent show that aired on ABC from 1948 to 1953. This program holds the distinction as the first regularly broadcast television series by the American Broadcasting Company. Format Debuting on April 15, 1948, and hosted first by Bert Lytell and then Neil Hamilton, ''Hollywood Screen Test'' sought to give exposure to many up-and-coming actors who were looking for their big break. The relatively unknown actors would be picked to guest star on the show, then they would have half-hour scenes of dialogue with established stage and screen actors.
