1946–47 Stoke City F.C. Season
The 1946–47 season was Stoke City's 40th season in the Football League and the 26th in the First Division. After a seven year absence due to World War II, the Football League made a welcome return for the 1946–47 season. Stoke were boosted by their time in the war leagues where they used many younger players to speed up their development. So Stoke now with a squad full of talent went on to achieve the finest league season in the club's history as they were involved in their first real attempt at winning the English title. The season was expanded until June due to a poor winter weather wise and on the final day of the season Stoke needed to beat Sheffield United to claim their first league title, but with the unhappy Stanley Matthews now moved on to Blackpool, Stoke lost 2–1 and ended up in 4th position. Arthur Jepson
Arthur Jepson (12 July 1915 – 17 July 1997) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Nottinghamshire before becoming an umpire. In addition to cricket he was also an accomplished football goalkeeper who played over 100 games in the Football League before turning his hand to management. A right-arm fast-medium bowler for Nottinghamshire between 1938 and 1959, he took 1050 first-class wickets, becoming one of the top ten most prolific bowlers in the club's history. He then spent 26 years as an umpire, presiding over four Test matches. In his footballing career he played for non-league sides Newark Town, Mansfield Town, and Grantham Town, before playing for Port Vale either side of World War II. He then spent 1946 to 1948 in the top-flight with Stoke City, before winding down his career following a two-year stint with Lincoln City. George Mountford (footballer, Born 1921)
George Fredrick Mountford (30 March 1921 – 14 June 1973) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Queens Park Rangers and Stoke City. Career Mountford was born in Kidderminster and began his career playing for local side Kidderminster Harriers before joining Stoke City in December 1942 for a fee of £40. During the War League Mountford established himself in Bob McGrory's side as a right winger providing crosses for Tommy Sale and namesake Frank Mountford. With Stanley Matthews on wartime duty with Blackpool Mountford took his number 7 shirt and Matthews struggled to win it back. Whilst he was not as talented as Matthews, Mountford made up for it with his hard work and possessed a good turn of speed which often took him into goalscoring opportunities. Ayresome Park
Ayresome Park was a football stadium in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England. It was the home of Middlesbrough F.C. from its construction in time for the 1903–04 season, until the Riverside Stadium opened in 1995. It was demolished in 1997 and replaced with housing. History Middlesbrough had previously played at Linthorpe Road West cricket ground, but election to the Football League meant that an improved stadium was required. Ayresome Park was built at Paradise Field, adjacent to the old Paradise Ground of Middlesbrough Ironopolis, who had played in the Football League in the 1893–94 season. The highest attendance at the ground (53,802) was set on 27 December 1949, when Middlesbrough played their North East rivals Newcastle United. Alexander Ormston
Alexander Ormston (10 February 1919 – 12 July 1975) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Stoke City. Career Ormston attended Wellington Road school where he was captain of the Hanley boys and Stoke-on-Trent schools football teams. After finishing school he started work at a local colliery whilst also playing football with Summerbank, a nursery club for local league side Stoke City. He signed professional forms with Stoke when he was 17 and made his debut the following year. He had a peculiar crouching style, huddled over the ball with his body arched forward at a seemingly impossible angle as he was a hunchback. However, despite this at 5 ft 6 he was a pacey winger whose major strength was his crossing and his ability to track back and help out the defence which was unheard of in the 1940s.
