The 1945 South American Basketball Championship was the 12th edition of this regional tournament. It was held in Guayaquil, Ecuador and won by the Brazil national basketball team. Six teams competed, including Colombia in their first appearance. After an experiment with a two-round tournament two years earlier, the 1945 competition returned to a single round format. It was held in Lima, Peru and won by the Argentina national basketball team. 6 teams, including Bolivia in their first appearance, competed despite the World War that was currently under way. Placing in the top four qualified a team to move on to the final round. Final round The top four teams advanced to the final round, where they played each of the other three once. The South American Basketball Championship, or FIBA South American Championship, is the main FIBA tournament for men's national teams from South America's region of FIBA Americas. The Colombia national basketball team (Spanish: Selección de baloncesto de Colombia) represents Colombia in men's international basketball competitions and organized and run by the Colombia Basketball Federation (''Federación Colombiana de Baloncesto''). In South America, Team Colombia made some considerable improvements in the last decade but still stands in the shadow of the ''Big Four'' Basketball Powers ( Team Argentina, Team Brazil, Team Venezuela and Team Uruguay).
