Southern League Cup (Scotland)
The Southern League Cup was a regional Scottish football competition held during the Second World War, due to the suspension of national competitions. Held between 1940 and 1946, the competition involved all teams from the Southern League and was played as four groups of four with the group winners forming the semi-finals. In the final season, due to additional teams, the competition doubled in size with quarter-finals for the eight group winners. Rangers dominated the tournament, appearing in every final and winning four out of the six. On two occasions, the winners were decided by which team had more corner kicks after the finals ended in draws. Alec Raymond Gibson (born December 9, 1963) is a former American football defensive end who played in the National Football League (NFL) for Washington Redskins during the 1987 NFL season. He played college football at Illinois. Career In 1987, Gibson played in three games for the Washington Redskins as a replacement player. Sammy Ross
Samuel Ross (13 November 1914 – 29 October 1973) was a Scottish footballer who played as a wing half. Ross began his career in the mid-1930s with Kilmarnock, making over 150 league appearances and picking up a Scottish Cup runners-up medal during his six years at Rugby Park. At the end of the decade, Ross joined Rangers, leaving within a year to join Falkirk. Around 1942, Ross was registered with Motherwell, joining Dundee United in 1946, where he featured in 29 league games. Andy Paton
Andrew Paton (2 January 1923 – 8 February 2014) was a Scottish football player and manager. A centre half, Paton played primarily for Motherwell, with a short spell at Hamilton Academical late in his career, and he then managed Hamilton for nine years. He won the Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup and Scottish Division Two with Motherwell – having joined as a teenager from the Junior level during World War II – and in 2006 was voted the club's 'greatest ever player'. Alexander Millar (21 October 1911 – 28 January 1977) was a Scottish footballer who played as a centre half. Career Born with the surname Urbonis, Millar was a member of North Lanarkshire's Lithuanian immigrant community. Alex Venters
Alexander Venters (9 June 1913 – 30 April 1959) was a Scottish footballer, who played for Cowdenbeath, Rangers and Scotland. Career Alex Venters, an inside forward, joined Rangers in November 1933 after his first club Cowdenbeath. He spent a total of 13 years at Ibrox Park, winning three Scottish league titles (1935, 1937 and 1939), two Scottish Cups (1935, 1936) and scoring 102 goals in 201 appearances. 18 of these 102 goals came against Celtic in various competitions. In the last season before association football was suspended due to World War II (1939) Venters was top scorer in the Scottish First Division (35 goals). Venters was also a prolific scorer during World War II; however, as these games were unofficial, his additional 53 wartime goals cannot be added to his official goalscoring record. Torrance Gillick (19 May 1915 – 16 December 1971) was a Scottish footballer who played as a winger for Rangers, Everton and Partick Thistle, and for the Scotland national team.
