The 1941 Carnegie Tech Tartans football team was an American football team that represented the Carnegie Institute of Technology—now known as Carnegie Mellon University—as an independent during the 1941 college football season. In Edward Baker's second year as head coach, the Tartans compiled a 1–7 record, concurrent with their recent de-emphasis of football, and were outscored 148 to 37, including no points in their final three contests. Edward Baker (American Football)
Edward Baker (c. 1909 – December 22, 1959) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Carnegie Institute of Technology—now known as Carnegie Mellon University—from 1940 to 1942 and from 1949 to 1959. As a college football player, Baker was a three-time letter winner for the University of Pittsburgh. He also played Minor League Baseball. Baker died at the age of 50, on December 22, 1959, at UPMC Mercy South Side Outpatient Center, South Side Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after having has surgery six days earlier for an intestinal obstruction. In additional to coaching, he also practiced dentistry. Beaver Falls is a city in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,005 at the 2020 census. Located 31 miles (50 km) northwest of Pittsburgh, the city lies along the Beaver River, six miles (9 km) north of its confluence with the Ohio River. It is a part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. History The area of present-day Beaver Falls was first mentioned in 1770 in the journals of David Zeisberger, a Moravian Church missionary who eventually settled in present-day Lawrence County. The 1941 Pittsburgh Panthers football team was an American football team that represented the University of Pittsburgh as an independent during the 1941 college football season. In their third year under head coach Charley Bowser, the Panthers compiled a 3–6 record and were outscored by a total of 171 to 82. Guard Ralph Fife was selected as a first-team All-American by the Associated Press (AP). Fife was also selected by the AP as a first-team player on the 1941 All-Eastern football team. James Gamble Nippert Memorial Stadium is an outdoor stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. Primarily used for American football, it is the home field of the Cincinnati Bearcats football team. Shaw Stadium is a stadium in East Cleveland, Ohio, United States, mainly used for high school football. The stadium was built in 1923 and is home to the Shaw High School Cardinals football team and marching band. In 1938, the Cleveland Rams of the National Football League (NFL) played three of their four home games at Shaw, winning two and losing one. Pitt Stadium was an outdoor athletic stadium in the eastern United States, located on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The 1941 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team was an American football team that represented the University of Notre Dame as an independent during the 1941 college football season. In its first season under head coach Frank Leahy, Notre Dame compiled an 8–0–1 record, outscored opponents by a total of 189 to 64, and was ranked No. 3 in the final AP Poll. Tackle Paul Lillis was the team captain. Quarterback Angelo Bertelli led the team on offense and went on to win the Heisman Trophy in 1943. End Bob Dove was a consensus first-team player on the 1941 All-America team; he was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
