1940–41 Gauliga Ostmark
The 1940–41 Gauliga Ostmark was the third season of the Gauliga Ostmark, the first tier of football in German-annexed Austria from 1938 to 1945, officially referred to as ''Ostmark''. SK Rapid Wien won the championship and qualified for the 1941 German football championship which it won by defeating FC Schalke 04 4–3 in the final. The Gauliga Ostmark and Gauliga Donau-Alpenland titles from 1938 to 1944, excluding the 1944–45 season which was not completed, are recognised as official Austrian football championships by the Austrian Bundesliga. Table The 1940–41 season saw three new clubs in the league, Floridsdorfer AC, Grazer SC and Linzer ASK. Compare to the previous season the league had seen an expansion from eight to ten teams. Gauliga Ostmark
The Gauliga Ostmark, renamed Gauliga Donau-Alpenland in 1941, was the highest football league in Austria after its annexation by Germany in 1938. Shortly after the occupation, the Nazis reorganised the administrative regions in Austria, and the seven ''Gaue'' ''Carinthia'', ''Niederdonau'', ''Oberdonau'', ''Salzburg'', ''Styria'', ''Vienna'' and ''Tyrol-Vorarlberg'' replaced the country of Austria. From 1941, the northernmost region of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, ''Drava Banovina'', became part of the ''Gaue'' ''Carinthia'' and ''Styria''. The Floridsdorfer Athletics Sports Club or simply Floridsdorfer AC is a professional football club based in Floridsdorf, the 21st district of Vienna. The club was founded in August 1904. A Gauliga () was the highest level of play in German football from 1933 to 1945. The leagues were introduced in 1933, after the Nazi takeover of power by the National Socialist League of the Reich for Physical Exercise. Name The German word ''Gauliga'' is composed of Gau, approximately meaning county or region, and ''Liga'', or league. The plural is ''Gauligen''. While the name Gauliga is not in use in German football any more, mainly because it is attached to the Nazi past, some sports in Germany still have Gauligen, like gymnastics and faustball. The Wiener Sport-Club, sometimes abbreviated as WSC, was established in 1883 in Vienna, Austria and is one of the country's oldest athletics clubs. Their traditional home is in the Dornbach quarter of the city ( 17th district). History At various times throughout its history the club has had departments for fencing, boxing, wrestling, cycling, handball, track and field, field hockey, tennis, squash, football and water polo. The football team enjoyed success in Austria National Championship in 1922, 1958 and 1959. Their 1958 season included an impressive 7–0 victory over Juventus in European Champions Cup. Two bankruptcies in the 1990s eventually led the team to slip into the lower leagues. First Vienna FC is an Austrian association football club based in the Döbling district of Vienna. Established on 22 August 1894, it is the country's oldest team and has played a notable role in the history of the game there.
