Graded Stakes Race
A graded stakes race is a thoroughbred horse race in the United States that meets the criteria of the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). A specific grade level (I, II, III or listed) is then assigned to the race, based on statistical analysis of the quality of the field in previous years, provided the race meets the minimum purse criteria for the grade in question. In Canada, a similar grading system is maintained by the Jockey Club of Canada. Graded stakes races are similar to Group races in Europe but the grading is more dynamic in North America. The grading system was designed in 1973 and first published in 1974. The original purpose of grading was to identify the most competitive races, which helps horsemen make comparisons of the relative quality of bloodstock for breeding and sales purposes. Roy Waldron
Roy J. Waldron (April 3, 1894 - May 15, 1963) was a batboy for the History of the St. Louis Browns, St. Louis Browns before he turned to Horse trainer, training Thoroughbred racehorses. He is best known for winning the 1940 Kentucky Derby with Gallahadion, a colt he race conditioned for Ethel V. Mars of Mars, Incorporated, chocolate bar fame. Racing career and World War I service Roy Waldron had a short career as a jockey but his ongoing employment in horse racing was interrupted by service in World War I with the United States Army, Fifth Company, 157th Depot Brigade (United States), 157th Depot Brigade. On his passing in 1963, Sgt. Waldron was interred in the Long Island National Cemetery. When the War ended, Roy Waldron returned to racing as part of the training operations with Xalapa Farm in Paris, Kentucky under manager James McClelland. Leon "Buddy" Haas (December 27, 1915 – April 19, 1982) was a jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing who in 1941 was reported to be earning the highest salary of any jockey in the United States. Racing career Widely known as "Buddy", Leon Hass began riding in 1931 mainly at smaller tracks until his career got a boost on August 28, 1933, when he rode six winners on a single racecard at Thistledown Racecourse in Cleveland, Ohio, five of which were consecutive. In the years following that acclaimed success he would be hired to ride for prominent owners such as Hal Price Headley, Charles Howard, Calumet Farm and members of the Phipps family at the big tracks in New York, Kentucky, Illinois and California. Nicholas J. Wall (December 18, 1906 – March 17, 1983) was a Newfoundland Colony born jockey who competed successfully in Canada and was the 1938 National Champion rider in the United States. Born in Lower Gully, Kelligrews, Conception Bay, Newfoundland Colony, while still a small boy Nick Wall's family moved to Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. A coal mining town, the diminutive Wall work in the mines as a pony rider. He began his professional jockey career in 1926 and in 1928 scored his first major win in the King Edward Gold Cup at Woodbine Park Racetrack in Toronto. Woolford Farm raised thoroughbred race horses in eastern Kansas, in what is now the city of Prairie Village, a suburb of Kansas City. The was owned by Herbert M. Woolf. Trainer Ben A. Jones worked there before going to Calumet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Woolf had hired Ben Jones after he had established a reputation of training and breeding horses at the family ranch in Parnell, Missouri. Ben was accompanied by his son Jimmy Jones. After Lawrin won the Kentucky Derby the two trainers went to work for Warren Wright, Sr. at Calumet Farm. At Calumet the two trained seven horses that won the Kentucky Derby including two Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing winners.
