1938 World Figure Skating Championships
The World Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union in which figure skaters compete for the title of World Champion. Men's competitions took place on February 18 to 19 in Berlin, Germany and ladies' competitions took place on February 4 to 5 in Stockholm, Sweden. Freddie Tomlins
Frederick William Edwin Tomlins (5 August 1919 – 20 June 1943) was a British figure skater. He was the 1939 World silver medalist and European silver medalist. He competed at the 1936 Winter Olympics and placed 10th. Military service and death Tomlins served as a pilot officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War. On 20 June 1943, he took part in an anti-submarine mission aboard Armstrong Whitworth Whitley '' LA814'' with Coastal Command. During the mission, the aircraft engaged a U-boat and was shot down in flames with all aboard killed. Lydia Veicht (1922 – 18 September 2007) was a German figure skater. She won five national titles. She placed fifth at the 1938 World Championships and fourth at the 1939 World Championships. Hedy Stenuf
Hedy Stenuf Byram (July 18, 1922 – November 7, 2010) was an Austrian figure skater who later competed for France and the United States. Representing the United States, she became a two-time World medalist. Life and career Stenuf first became known in the United States in 1934, when as an eleven-year-old she accompanied the Austrian champion Karl Schäfer on an exhibition tour in North America. The following season, she began appearing at major international competitions, placing 7th at the 1935 European Championships and fourth at the 1935 World Championships, which were held in her hometown of Vienna. She was considered a strong challenger to reigning champion Sonja Henie. At the 1936 Winter Olympic, Stenuf finished sixth in the singles competition. Cecilia Colledge
Magdalena Cecilia Colledge (28 November 1920 – 12 April 2008) was a British figure skater. She was the 1936 Olympic silver medalist, the 1937 World Champion, the 1937–1939 European Champion, and a six-time (1935–1939, 1946) British national champion. Colledge is credited as being the first female skater to perform a double jump, as well as being the inventor of both the camel spin and the layback spin. Personal life Cecilia Colledge grew up in London. Her father, Lionel, was a surgeon researching the treatment of throat cancer, and her mother, Margaret, the daughter of Admiral John Brackenbury. She had one sibling, a brother named Maule who served in the Royal Air Force and died during World War II. Colledge never married and had no children. Walter Jakobsson
Walter Andreas Jakobsson (6 February 1882 – 10 June 1957) was a Finnish figure skater, and the oldest figure skating Olympic champion (at age 38). As a single skater, he won the Finnish national championship in 1910 and 1911. In 1910, he partnered with German figure skater Ludowika Eilers. As pairs skaters, they won the World Championship in 1911, 1914, and 1923, and the Olympic gold in 1920. They finished second at the 1924 Olympics and fifth in 1928. Jakobsson studied engineering in Berlin, where he met Eilers in 1907. They married in 1911, and in 1916 moved to Helsinki, where Jakobsson got a job of the technical director of Kone OY (now Konecranes), a leading manufacturers of cranes. He held that post until retiring in 1947.
