1937 Wimbledon Championships
The 1937 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The tournament was held from Monday 21 June until Saturday 3 July 1937. It was the 57th staging of the Wimbledon Championships, and the third Grand Slam tennis event of 1937. Don Budge and Dorothy Round won the singles title. This was the first Wimbledon tournament during the reign of King George VI. Television This edition marked the first time that the Wimbledon Championships were televised by the BBC. Only matches taking place on Centre Court were transmitted by the BBC for half an hour each day. Wimbledon () is a district and town of Southwest London, England, southwest of the centre of London at Charing Cross; it is the main commercial centre of the London Borough of Merton. Wimbledon had a population of 68,187 in 2011 which includes the electoral wards of Abbey, Dundonald, Hillside, Trinity, Village, Raynes Park and Wimbledon Park. It is home to the Wimbledon Championships and New Wimbledon Theatre, and contains Wimbledon Common, one of the largest areas of common land in London. All England Lawn Tennis Club
The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, also known as the All England Club, based at Church Road, Wimbledon, London, England, is a private members' club. It is best known as the venue for the Wimbledon Championships, the only Grand Slam tennis event still held on grass. Initially an amateur event that occupied club members and their friends for a few days each summer, the championships have become far more prominent than the club itself. However, it still operates as a members' tennis club. The club has 375 full members, about 100 temporary playing members, and a number of honorary members. To become a full or temporary member, an applicant must obtain letters of support from four existing full members, two of whom must have known the applicant for at least three years. Yvon Petra
Yvon Petra (; 8 March 1916 – 12 September 1984) was a French male tennis player. He was born in Chợ Lớn, Ho Chi Minh City, Cholon, French Indochina. Petra is best remembered as the last Frenchman to win the Wimbledon Championships men's singles title (in 1946), beating Geoff Brown (tennis), Geoff Brown in five sets in the final. In doubles, he won the French Championships twice, in 1938 with Bernard Destremau, defeating the best pair in the world Don Budge, Budge-Gene Mako, Mako, and in 1946 with Marcel Bernard. In 1938, he won the singles and doubles title at the French Covered Court Championships. He was a prisoner of war in World War II and after his release won three Tournoi de France (tennis), Tournoi de France singles titles from 1943 through 1945. He emigrated to the United States and worked as a tennis pro at the Saddle and Cycle Club in Chicago and a country club in Connecticut towards the end of his life. Elsie Goldsack Pittman
Elsie Goldsack Pittman (née Goldsack; 21 January 1904 – 28 March 1975) was an English tennis player who competed during the second half of the 1920s and the 1930s. Between 1925 and 1939, she participated in 15 Wimbledon Championships. Her best result in the singles event was reaching the semifinal in 1929 in which she was defeated in straight sets by top-seeded and eventual champion Helen Wills. In the mixed doubles, she reached the quarterfinals in 1930 and 1931. Her biggest success at Grand Slam level came in 1937 when she partnered with Phyllis Mudford King to reach the final of the 1937 Wimbledon Championships, which they lost to Simonne Mathieu and Billie Yorke in straight sets. Phyllis King (tennis)
Phyllis Mudford King (23 August 1905 – 27 January 2006) was an English female tennis player and the oldest living Wimbledon champion when she died at age 100. Phyllis Evelyn Mudford was born in 1905 in Wallington, Surrey. She was educated at Sutton High School, where she was Captain of Tennis, and one of the school's four houses is named in her honour. She won the Wimbledon Ladies' Doubles Championship in 1931 with partner Dorothy Shepherd-Barron, and last took part in the tournament in 1953. Raymond Tuckey
Charles Raymond Davys Tuckey (15 June 1910 – 15 October 2005) was an English tennis player. Raymond Tuckey and Pat Hughes won the doubles in Wimbledon in 1936, defeating Charles Hare and Frank Wilde in five sets. In 1937 he again reached the men's doubles finals at Wimbledon but this time lost with Pat Hughes against American team of Don Budge and Gene Mako in four sets. Pat Hughes (tennis)
George Patrick Hughes (21 December 1902 – 8 May 1997) was an English tennis player. Hughes and Fred Perry won the doubles at the French Championships in 1933 and at the Australian Championships in 1934. Hughes later teamed up with Raymond Tuckey. They won the doubles in Wimbledon in 1936. Hughes reached the semi finals at Roland Garros in 1931, where he beat Vernon Kirby and George Lott before losing to Christian Boussus. Between 1929 and 1936 Hughes was a member of the British Davis Cup team.
