1937 VFL Grand Final
The 1937 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Geelong Football Club and Collingwood Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 25 September 1937. It was the 39th annual grand final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1937 VFL season. The match, attended by a then-record crowd of 88,540 spectators, was won by Geelong by a margin of 32 points, marking that club's third premiership victory and first since winning the 1931 VFL Grand Final. Due to the excellent display of skills, as well as the vigorous but fair play, and the closeness of the contest that was not decided until late in the last quarter, this Grand Final was regarded by many contemporaries as the greatest ever played. Tom Arklay
Tom Arklay (26 March 1914 – 11 January 2002) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Career A Geelong local, Arklay made his senior debut 1933. He was a tough and physical player, mostly used on the half back flank and also as a ruck rover. Geoff Mahon
Geoff Mahon (24 April 1915 – 16 February 1971) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the VFL. A ruckman, Mahon debuted for Geelong in 1936 and the following season was a reserve in their premiership side. Tommy Quinn
Thomas James Quinn (11 August 1908 – 11 November 1969) was a leading Australian rules footballer of the 1920s and 1930s, playing for Port Adelaide Football Club and Geelong Football Club. Born in Birkenhead, South Australia, the son of former Port Adelaide captain John Quinn, Sr. and the older brother of dual Magarey Medallist Bob, Quinn showed aptitude for football from a young age, and standing 170 cm tall and built like a tank, Quinn made his South Australian National Football League (SANFL) debut for Port as a rover in 1928. George Mervyn Dougherty (9 December 1913 – 21 November 1991) was an Australian rules footballer who played for four clubs in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1934 to 1945. Jack 'Copper' Evans (19 January 1908 – 10 July 1960) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1930s. Although primarily a ruckman, Evans could also play at centre half-forward and was Geelong's top goalkicker in 1935 with 32 goals. Leslie Francis Hardiman (1 April 1911 – 29 June 1962) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and for the Subiaco Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL). Jack Rogers Metherell (9 November 1912 – 30 November 1992) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the VFL during the 1930s. Clive Coles
Clive Leslie "Pixie" Coles (12 March 1911 – 9 April 1984) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Coles gave Geelong good service during the 1930s, after arriving at the club as a local recruit. From 1930 to 1936 he was most often seen in the back pockets, but could also play as a rover.
