1937 VFA Season
The 1937 Victorian Football Association season was the 59th season of the Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Prahran Football Club, after it came from fourth on the ladder to defeat Brunswick by two points in the Grand Final on 4 September. It was the club's first VFA premiership since it joined the Association in 1899. Premiership The home-and-home season was played over sixteen matches, a reduction from the eighteen games staged in 1936, before the top four clubs contested a finals series under the Page–McIntyre system to determine the premiers for the season. Prahran Football Club
Prahran Assumption Football Club (), nicknamed The Two Blues, is an Australian rules football club based at Toorak Park in Orrong Road between High Street and Malvern Road, Armadale, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The club is currently in Division 1 of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). The nickname ''Two Blues'' comes from the club uniform which has been royal blue and sky blue since the club formed in 1886. Teams Prahran fields Senior, Reserves, Club XVIII and junior teams. The senior team was coached in 2006 by Leigh Stafford, who resigned from the coaching role at the end of the season. Williamstown Football Club
The Williamstown Football Club, nicknamed The Seagulls, is an Australian rules football club based in Melbourne. The club currently competes in the men's and women's Victorian Football League and VFLW competitions. History The Williamstown Football Club was formed in 1864, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Australia. The club was initially considered a junior club, before being granted senior status in 1884. Starting in 1884, the club competed in the Victorian Football Association. Williamstown's original colours were black and yellow. When it joined the VFA, the Williamstown Football Club sought to play its matches at the Williamstown Cricket Ground, but was not granted permission owing to a dispute with the Williamstown Cricket Club, and instead used the unfenced Gardens Reserve as its home ground. Jack Lowry
Jack Brown Lowry (25 November 1916 – 5 February 2007) was an Australian rules footballer and cricketer, who at his peak played football with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and first-class cricket for Victoria. A Melbourne High School student proficient at both cricket and football, Lowry began his careers with Prahran in both sports: the Prahran Cricket Club in district cricket beginning from the 1935–36 season, and the Prahran Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). A quality all-rounder who averaged 40 with the bat and took 101 wickets at 24.1 as a spin bowler throughout his district career, Lowry was selected for Victoria in its non- Sheffield Shield first-class cricket fixture against Tasmania at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1937/38, scoring 62 in his first innings and being run out for three in his next. Recorder Cup
The J. J. Liston Trophy is awarded annually to the best and fairest senior player in the Victorian Football League (formerly the Victorian Football Association). It is named after J.J. Liston, a businessman, civic leader and sports administrator who was fundamental in advancing sport in Australia, particularly Australian Rules Football and Soccer. History The first award for the Association best and fairest player was the Woodham Cup, named after committeeman Alf Woodham, which was first awarded in 1923. The Woodham Cup was renamed the Recorder Cup, named after the Association's official match-day publication, in 1926. Starting from 1933, a second award, the V.F.A. Neville Huggins
Neville Huggins (11 September 1906 – 29 December 1987) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Huggins started his football career in the Ovens and Murray League where he took the field for Rutherglen. He then spent some time at Williamstown before being signed by Fitzroy for the 1929 VFL season. His stint at Fitzroy wasn't successful, ending after just four matches owing to a dispute with the committee. Huggins, a ruck-rover, was also a policeman by profession. The North Melbourne team of the early 1930s was particularly weak and in his initial season with the club he didn't experience a win. It wasn't until 1932 that he played in a winning side, ending a streak of 22 consecutive losses, which stretched back to his time at Fitzroy. George Hawkins (footballer)
George William Hawkins (7 December 1908 – 20 July 1979) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Prahran in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Hawkins was a full-forward and centre half-forward for Prahran during the 1930s. He began his senior career in 1932, and became a prolific goalkicker during the era. He scored his first century of goals in the 1934 season, kicking 107 goals. He was a premiership player with Prahran in 1937, and kicked six goals in that season's Grand Final. In 1939, Hawkins kicked a new Association record of 164 goals and was the VFA leading goalkicker for the only time in his career; his record surpassed Western Australian George Doig's national senior record of 152 goals, although Hawkins' claim to the record was disputed because the VFA, having introduced the throw-pass rule in 1938, was no longer considered to be playing the national code. Roy McKay (footballer)
Claude Roy McKay (25 March 1909 – 12 July 1998) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1930s. McKay, who came to Footscray from Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Williamstown, was a durable utility who rarely missed a game. He was used mostly as a defender and twice represented the VFL at interstate football. After bringing up his 100th league game in 1935, McKay joined Brunswick as captain-coach, a position he remained in until retiring in 1940. Geoff McInnes (5 February 1909 – 23 March 1988) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1930s. Toorak Park
Toorak Park is a cricket and Australian rules football arena in the Melbourne suburb of Armadale, Victoria, Australia. It is the home ground of the Prahran Football Club and Old Xaverians Football Club of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) and Prahran Cricket Club, which plays in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. The current capacity of the venue is 15,000. Toorak Park opened in 1893 when it was used by Hawksburn Cricket Club (later Prahran). The Prahran Football Club in the Victorian Football League, Victorian Football Association began home matches at the venue in 1899, and used it as its home base until it left the Association after 1994. Oakleigh Football Club
Oakleigh Football Club, nicknamed the Devils, was an Australian rules football club from Oakleigh which played in the VFA from 1929 until 1994. Oakleigh wore purple guernseys with a gold monogram thus giving them their original nickname the Purple and Golds. History The club was formed in 1891 and after having success in the Melbourne Districts Association (premierships in 1907, 1924, & 1928), they were one of two teams admitted into the VFA in 1929, the other being Sandringham.
