1937 Fijian General Election
General elections were held in Fiji in July 1937, the first in which an equal number of Europeans and Indo-Fijians were elected. Background The elections had originally been due in 1935, but in July 1936 the term of the Legislative Council elected in 1932 was extended until 1936 following the passing of a motion by the elected members to make the Council an entirely appointed body due to concerns that Indo-Fijian voters would outnumber Europeans. Lala Sukuna
Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna (22 April 1888 – 30 May 1958) was a Fijian chief, scholar, soldier, and statesman. He is regarded as the forerunner of the Modern Fiji, post-independence leadership of Fiji. He did more than anybody to lay the groundwork for self-government by fostering the development of modern institutions in Fiji, and although he died a dozen years before independence from the United Kingdom was achieved in 1970, his vision set the course that Fiji was to follow in the years to come. John Trotter (died 28 July 1954) was an Australian businessman who worked for Burns Philp in Tonga and Fiji for over 30 years. He served as a member of the Legislative Council of Fiji between 1938 and 1944. Biography After graduating from Hawkesbury Agricultural College, Trotter moved to Tonga in 1913 to set up the Tonga Agricultural College. Said Hasan was an Indo-Fijian lawyer and politician. He served in the Legislative Council between 1937 and 1944. Biography Hasan was born in Amritsar Punjab Province in British India and earned a BA at Punjab University. Popi Seniloli
Ratu Popi Epeli Cakobau (1883–11 October 1936) was a Fijian chief and politician. He held the title of Vunivalu of Bau from 1914 until his death in 1936, and was also a nominated member of the Legislative Council. Biography Born Popi Epeli Senioli, he was the son of Josefa Celua, who was the third son of the Tui Viti Seru Epenisa Cakobau and Litia Samanunu, Ratu Popi inherited the title from his cousin, Penaia Kadavulevu in 1914. Like his predecessor, Ratu Popi was a parliamentarian in the Legislative Council of Fiji. After his death in 1936, it is argued that his eldest son Tevita Naulivou inherited the title of Vunivalu, after whom it transferred to another son, George Cakobau. Popi and his wife Adi Torika were Christian converts. In 1934 he changed his name by deed poll to Popi Epeli Cakobau. Ratu Penijamini Veli (1874 – 27 August 1938) was a Fijian chief, civil servant and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Council from 1937 until his death the following year. Biography Born in 1874, Veli joined the civil service in the mid-1890s. He became a sub-inspector of native constabulary in 1906, before being appointed Roko Tui of Macuata Province in 1909. Although he later retired, he was subsequently reappointed to the post.
