1936 Walker Cup
The 1936 Walker Cup, the 9th Walker Cup Match, was played on September 2 and 3, 1936, at Pine Valley Golf Club, Pine Valley, New Jersey. The United States won by 9 matches to 0 with 3 matches halved. Format Four 36-hole matches of foursomes were played on Wednesday and eight singles matches on Thursday. Each of the 12 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 36th hole extra holes were not played. The team with most points won the competition. If the two teams were tied, the previous winner would retain the trophy. Teams The United States team of 11 was announced in April. Francis Ouimet was the captain and was given the option of whether to play himself or not. Pine Valley Golf Club is a golf course in Pine Valley, Camden County, in southern New Jersey. It was ranked the number one course in ''Golf Magazine'''s 100 Top Courses in the U.S. and the World in 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2020. It is a private club, and non-members can play only if invited and accompanied by a member. George Voigt (golfer)
Georg Voigt was a German historian who was born in 1827 in Königsberg in East Prussia. He died in Leipzig in 1891. Voigt was the son of the historian Johannes Voigt. Voigt belonged to the founders of modern research into the Italian Renaissance along with Jacob Burckhardt. In 1860, Voigt was called by Heinrich von Sybel to the University of Rostock as professor of history. In 1866, he became professor of history at the University of Leipzig, following the historian Wilhelm Wachsmuth. His research was into the topics of humanism in the 15th and 16th centuries and the history of the Schmalkaldic war. Unlike Burckhardt, Voigt described only the first century of a movement which came from Renaissance Florence and spread all through Europe. Hector Thomson (golfer)
Hector Thomson (21 November 1913 – March 1988) was a Scottish golfer. He won the 1936 Amateur Championship and was in the British Walker Cup team in 1936 and 1938. He turned professional and had some success, winning the Scottish Professional Championship in 1953. Thomson was born in Machrihanish, Argyll, Scotland, the son of Archie Thomson, the professional at Machrihanish Golf Club. Archie qualified for the 1925 Open Championship, the last Open at Prestwick, and finished tied for 65th place, having qualified in a tie for 14th place. Archie later moved to Glasgow, where he ran a golf school. Thomson first came to prominence when he won the Boys Amateur Championship at Glasgow Golf Club in 1931, beating Francis McGloin 5&4 in the final. Nearly 2,000 people followed the match. Gordon Peter Wilkinson (29 November 1926 – 15 June 2022), known professionally as Gordon Peters, was an English actor and comedian. Early life Peters was born in Shildon, County Durham, England on 29 November 1926. His mother was a piano teacher and his father a tenor-voiced butcher, both enthusiastic amateur performers, Peters spent much of his early childhood as a chorister at Durham Cathedral. Peters began his early career as a junior bank clerk after national service in the Royal Navy, at the Standard Bank of South Africa, in Harare, (Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe). John Russell Langley (June 1, 1943 – June 26, 2021) was an American television and film director, writer, and producer who was best known as the creator and executive producer of the television show '' Cops'', which premiered on Fox in March 1989. Alec Jeffrey Hill (2 July 1916 – 27 August 2008) was an Australian military historian and academic best known for his biography of General Sir Harry Chauvel and his work on the Australian Dictionary of Biography. Biography Alec Jeffrey Hill was born in Sydney, New South Wales on 2 July 1916. His father, who served in the Great War, died while Alec was a boy.
