The 1936 Walker Cup, the 9th Walker Cup Match, was played on September 2 and 3, 1936, at Pine Valley Golf Club, Pine Valley, New Jersey. The United States won by 9 matches to 0 with 3 matches halved. Format Four 36-hole matches of foursomes were played on Wednesday and eight singles matches on Thursday. Each of the 12 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 36th hole extra holes were not played. The team with most points won the competition. If the two teams were tied, the previous winner would retain the trophy. Teams The United States team of 11 was announced in April. Francis Ouimet was the captain and was given the option of whether to play himself or not. The day before the match started he announced that he had decided not to play, to give the younger players a chance and that all the other 10 members of the team would play in either the foursomes or the singles. Pine Valley Golf Club is a golf course in Pine Valley, Camden County, in southern New Jersey. It was ranked the number one course in ''Golf Magazine'''s 100 Top Courses in the U.S. and the World in 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2020. It is a private club, and non-members can play only if invited and accompanied by a member. Pine Valley secured the number one ranking in ''Golf Digest'' biennial America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses 2019–20 and 2021-22. History Pine Valley was founded in 1913 by a group of amateur golfers from Philadelphia. They purchased 184 acres (0.7 km²) of rolling, sandy ground deep in the pinelands of southern New Jersey, and gave George Arthur Crump, who knew the area from hunting expeditions, the opportunity to design the course. The site was challenging and the project became something of an obsession for Crump, who sold his hotel in Philadelphia and plowed his money into the course. George Voigt (golfer)
Georg Voigt was a German historian who was born in 1827 in Königsberg in East Prussia. He died in Leipzig in 1891. Voigt was the son of the historian Johannes Voigt. Voigt belonged to the founders of modern research into the Italian Renaissance along with Jacob Burckhardt. In 1860, Voigt was called by Heinrich von Sybel to the University of Rostock as professor of history. In 1866, he became professor of history at the University of Leipzig, following the historian Wilhelm Wachsmuth. His research was into the topics of humanism in the 15th and 16th centuries and the history of the Schmalkaldic war. Unlike Burckhardt, Voigt described only the first century of a movement which came from Renaissance Florence and spread all through Europe.
