On Saturday 6 June 1931, an election was held in the Australian state of Victoria to choose 17 of the 34 members of the Victorian Legislative Council, the upper house of the Victorian parliament. Preferential voting was used. The states and territories are federated administrative divisions in Australia, ruled by regional governments that constitute the second level of governance between the federal government and local governments. George Martley Davis
George Martley Davis (7 January 1860 – 20 July 1938) was an Australian politician. He was born in Emerald Hill to grazier George Davis and Mary Critchley Sylvester. He attended state and grammar schools and worked as a stock agent on the Paroo River in Queensland. From 1882 to 1887 he worked as a valuer for Maffra Shire Council before becoming a partner in a stock and station agency. On 7 March 1886 he married Jane Elizabeth Manson, with whom he had four children. He served on Rosedale Shire Council from 1908 to 1930 and was president from 1909 to 1910 and from 1918 to 1919. Arthur Disney
James Herbert Arthur Disney (8 December 1864 – 28 July 1943) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat West to carter and tailor Charles Disney and Sarah Darley. He left school at fourteen to become a boilermaker, and from around 1886 worked in Melbourne. On 22 April 1886 he married Isabella Christina Hill, with whom he had five children. He left Melbourne in 1889, finding difficulty due to his union connections. He spent time as a fruiterer and woodyard proprietor, and from around 1898 was a second-hand furniture dealer. He served on South Melbourne City Council from 1908 to 1918 and was mayor from 1915 to 1916. In 1916 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as a Labor member, representing Melbourne West Province. He was a minister without portfolio from July to November 1924 and from 1927 to 1928. His son James was elected to the Council in 1940 for the United Australia Party. Percy James Clarey (20 January 189017 May 1960) was an Australian trade union leader and politician. He served as president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) from 1943 to 1949 and represented the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in the Victorian Legislative Council (1937−1949) and Australian House of Representatives (1949−1960). Herbert Olney
Sir Herbert Horace Olney (26 November 1875 – 20 July 1957) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat to produce merchant Charles Olney and Annie Elizabeth Capp. He attended Ballarat College and became an insurance worker, first for Manchester Fire Insurance and then for Colonial Mutual Fire Insurance. On 11 April 1898 he married Annie Lizette Trudgeon, with whom he had a daughter. He retired from insurance in 1927 and was chairman of a number of company boards. William Beckett (Australian Politician)
William James Beckett CBE (10 June 1870 – 7 May 1965) was an Australian politician. Born in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran, to Irish-born taxi proprietor Samuel Beckett and Scottish-born Margaret Cameron, he attended both state and private schools before becoming a second-hand furniture dealer at Fitzroy with his brother Henry. On 22 February 1893, he married Alice Maud Street, with whom he had two children. In 1914, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as Labor member for Melbourne North. That year he was also elected to Fitzroy City Council, where he served until 1932 (mayor 1921–22, 1925–26). Daniel McNamara
Daniel Laurence McNamara (28 March 1876 – 28 December 1947) was an Australian politician. He was born at Pomborneit to farmer Michael McNamara and Mary Taff. He worked as a produce agent in Melbourne from 1906 to 1909, and in 1907 joined the Australian Workers' Union (AWU). He was involved in founding the Rural Workers Union in 1909 and represented both unions on the Trades Hall Council. From 1909 to 1947 he served on the Labor Party state executive. On 1 May 1915 he married Florence May Spinks, with whom he had three children. He was instrumental in the merger of the Rural Workers Union with the AWU and the Queensland General Workers Union (1912–13), and served on Berwick Shire Council from 1910 to 1910 (president 1906–07).
