1930–31 Port Vale F.C. Season
The 1930–31 season was Port Vale's 25th season of football in the English Football League, and their 34th in the Second Division following their promotion from the Third Division North the previous season. They finished fifth with 47 points, making it the most successful season in the club's history in terms of league position. They were seven points short of promotion to the top-flight, and seventeen points clear of relegation. Overview Second Division The pre-season saw the arrival of goalscoring forward Harry Roberts from Lincoln City; big goalkeeper Arthur Slater from Clapton Orient; and young outside-left Clarence Spencer from Birmingham F.C. Billy Briscoe
William Briscoe (6 November 1896 – 7 February 1994) was an English Association football, footballer who played as a Forward (association football), forward. A former Watford F.C., Watford, Stoke City F.C., Stoke, Milton Brotherhood, and Leek United player; he first turned professional with Port Vale F.C., Port Vale in 1918. After five years he moved on to Congleton Town F.C., Congleton Town for a season, only to return to Vale in 1924. He then spent the next seven years with the club, racking up a combined total of 307 league appearances for the club over his two spells, scoring 51 goals. He returned to Congleton in 1931 before later retiring from the game. He also played cricket for Staffordshire County Cricket Club, Staffordshire in the Minor Counties Cricket Championship, Minor Counties Championship from 1921 to 1925. Bob Connelly
Robert J. Connelly was a Scottish footballer who played as a midfielder for Port Vale between August 1921 and May 1932. He made 337 league and cup appearances, and helped the club to win the Third Division North title in 1929–30. Career Port Vale Connelly started his career with Townhead Hibernians and later Shettleston Juniors, before joining Port Vale in August 1921. He scored his first senior goal in a 5–2 defeat by Bury at Gigg Lane on 8 October, before bagging a brace in a 5–2 win in the reverse fixture at The Old Recreation Ground seven days later. He scored seven goals in 38 Second Division appearances in the 1921–22 season, and three goals in 30 league and cup games in the 1922–23 season. He hit two goals in 25 games in the 1923–24 campaign, and two goals in 41 matches in the 1924–25 season. Albert Pynegar
Albert Pynegar (24 September 1895 – 1978) was an English footballer who played at inside-forward for Eastwood Rangers, Sutton Town, Leicester City, Coventry City, Oldham Athletic, Port Vale, Chesterfield, and Rotherham United. He helped Port Vale to the Third Division North title in 1929–30, and then fired Chesterfield to the same honour the following season. Career Pynegar played for Eastwood Rangers, Sutton Town, Leicester City, Coventry City and Oldham Athletic, before joining Port Vale in January 1929, in a deal where he and £1,300 were exchanged for Stewart Littlewood. He had been the "Latics" top-scorer in the 1926–27 and 1927–28 seasons with 19 and 18 goals respectively. Barnsley () is a market town in South Yorkshire, England. As the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the fourth largest settlement in South Yorkshire. Clarence Spencer
Clarence Grenville Spencer (5 August 1909 – 1979) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Port Vale, Barrow and Carlisle United. Career Spencer played for Butler's Hill and was on Birmingham's books, though without appearing for the first-team, before joining Second Division side Port Vale in June 1930. After making his debut at the Old Recreation Ground in a 2–0 win over Swansea Town on 11 October 1930, he became a first-team regular. He scored his first goal in the Football League seven days later, in a 3–0 win over Reading at Elm Park. However, after breaking an ankle on 26 January 1931, in a 3–1 home defeat to Everton, he lost his place to Dennis Izon and failed to win it back upon his recovery. Leyton () is a town in east London, England, within the London Borough of Waltham Forest. It borders Walthamstow to the north, Leytonstone to the east, and Stratford to the south, with Clapton, Hackney Wick and Homerton, across the River Lea, to the west. Thomas Arthur Winstanley Slater (25 February 1908 – 1976) was an English footballer. Career Slater played for Easington Colliery, Murton and Clapton Orient before joining Port Vale in June 1930. He kept a clean sheet on his debut; a 2–0 win over Swansea Town on 11 October 1930 at The Old Recreation Ground, and was the number one keeper until he lost this position to previous favourite Ben Davies in January 1931. Harry Roberts (footballer, Born 1907)
Henry Roberts (1 September 1907 – October 1984) was an England international footballer who played at inside-right for Barrow, Chesterfield, Lincoln City, Port Vale, Millwall, Peterborough United, and Spalding United. He was capped by England despite never playing top-flight football and scored in his one and only international game, in a 4–1 win over Belgium on 16 May 1931. Early and personal life Henry Roberts was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire on 1 September 1907. He was the twelfth of thirteen children to Richard and Isabella; his father was a blacksmith on the shipyards. Club career Roberts represented Lancashire Schools and played junior football with Barrow Wireworks. He joined Barrow as a professional during Christmas 1925.
