1930–31 Aston Villa F.C. Season
Aston Villa played the 1930–31 English football season in the Football League First Division. Villa scored 128 league goals in 42 matches, a First Division record. Villa's Pongo Waring finished as the leagues top scorer with 49 goals, overshadowing Eric Houghton who scored 30 goals. As of 2023, this remains the Villa record season for goals scored. Villa started the season with four successive league wins, a record not matched until the 2020–21 season. On 17 January 1931 Villa beat Bolton 3-1. They would go on to win their eight remaining home games and thus had nine consecutive home wins to end the season. Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, England. Located immediately to the north-east of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. It is approximately 1.5 miles from Birmingham City Centre. History Aston was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as "Estone", having a mill, a priest and therefore probably a church, woodland and ploughland. Arsenal Stadium
Arsenal Stadium was a football stadium in Highbury, London, which was the home of Arsenal Football Club between 6 September 1913 and 7 May 2006. It was popularly known as "Highbury" due to its location and was given the affectionate nickname of the "Home of Football" by the club. It was originally built in 1913 on the site of a local college's recreation ground and was significantly redeveloped twice. The first reconstruction came in the 1930s from which the Art Deco East and West Stands date. There was a second development; the first phase was completed in 1989 which added executive boxes to the Clock End, and afterwards in 1993 a new North Bank Stand was constructed, both following the recommendations of the Taylor Report which replaced the terraces to make the stadium an all-seater with four stands. Dicky York
Richard Ernest York (25 April 1899 – 9 December 1969), known as Dicky York (also spelled Dickie York), was an English footballer, who in addition to a long club career with Aston Villa in the Football League appeared twice for the England national team. A winger, he spent 16 years at Villa from 1915 to 1931 and was on the losing team in the 1924 FA Cup final. He later had brief spells with Port Vale and Brierley Hill Alliance. Early and personal life Richard Ernest York was born on 25 April 1899 in Handsworth, Staffordshire. He was the eldest of two children to Richard and Edith Mary (née Bagley); his father was a press tool maker. York enlisted in the Army on 8 May 1917, and by April 1918 had transferred to the Royal Air Force. He married Constance G. Wright in 1923. Harold "Harry" Morton (9 January 1909 – 4 April 1974) was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Aston Villa in the 1930s. Football career Early career Morton was born in Chadderton, near Oldham, Lancashire, and after working his way up through the local football leagues, he had trials with Bury, Southampton F.C. and Bolton Wanderers. However, before he was able to embark on a football career, he did his National service with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers serving with the British Army on the Rhine. He was spotted by Aston Villa Scouts Aston Villa during a match between the Villains and the B.A.O.R football team in Biebrich Germany. Joe Thomas Tate (4 August 1904 in Old Hill, Cradley Heath, England – 18 May 1973 in Cradley Heath) was an English footballer. John Mandley (12 February 1909 – 18 December 1988) was an English footballer, he was noted for his pinpoint crosses. He spent eight years in the English Football League, playing for Port Vale from 1926 to 1930 and top flight Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa from 1930 to 1934.
