1923 VFL Season
The 1923 VFL season was the 27th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured nine clubs, ran from 5 May until 20 October, and comprised a 16-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the fifth time, after it defeated by 17 points in the 1923 VFL Grand Final. Premiership season In 1923, the VFL competition had nine teams of 18 on-the-field players each, with no "reserves", although any of the 18 players who had left the playing field for any reason could later resume their place on the field at any time during the match. Each team played each other twice in a home-and-away season of 18 rounds (i.e., 16 matches and 2 byes). Greg Stockdale
Francis Gregory Stockdale (30 July 1899 – 14 May 1949) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1920s. Family The son of William Hallett Stockdale (1859–1927), and Agnes Stockdale (-1925), née Heavy (or Heavey or Harvey), Francis Gregory Stockdale was born at Kilmore, Victoria on 30 July 1899. One of his older brothers, William Hallett Stockdale (1887–1915), was killed in action at Gallipoli on 8 May 1915. He married Ivy Gladys Lobb (1894–1947) in 1936. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. George Bolt (footballer)
George James Bolt (1 August 1899 – 2 September 1966) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton, Hawthorn and North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Francis Bolt (1865–1950), and Catherine Ann Bolt (1868–1954), née Waite, George James Bolt was born at Rutherglen on 1 August 1899.
