1923 Honduran General Election
General elections were held in Honduras between 27 and 29 October 1923.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume I'', p407 Tiburcio Carías Andino won the presidential election with 47.1% of the vote. However, as no candidate had received an absolute majority in the public vote, Congress would vote on the candidates. However, Congress did not meet again until 1 January the following year. In December President Rafael López Gutiérrez declared a state of siege, suspended the constitution, and announced that he would remain in office in order to keep the peace. Although Congress was dominated by the two liberal parties, they did not want Carías, but also could not agree on a common candidate. As a result, Carías started a civil war in February, known as the War of Revindication. López Gutiérrez lost the support of his party in several provinces. Honduras
Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. The republic of Honduras is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. The Constitutionalist Liberal Party ( es, Partido Liberal Constitucionalista, PLC) is a political party in Nicaragua. At the Nicaraguan general election of 5 November 2006, the party won 25 of 92 seats in the National Assembly. Liberal Party Of Honduras
The Liberal Party of Honduras (Spanish: ''Partido Liberal de Honduras)'' is a centrist liberal political party in Honduras that was founded in 1891. It is the oldest extant political party in the country, and one of the two main parties that have until recently dominated Honduran politics. The party is a member of the Liberal International. The PLH is identified with the colours red and white, as the flag Francisco Morazán used in most of his military campaigns during time of the Central American Federal Republic. Juan Ángel Arias Boquín (7 August 1859 – 29 April 1927) was President of Honduras 1 February – 13 April 1903. He was Member of the '' Partido Liberal de Honduras''. Manuel Bonilla finished first in the elections of 1902 but the Honduran Congress didn't gave him presidency by law, because Manuel Bonilla was an outlaw. Miguel Paz Barahona (3 September 1863 – 11 November 1937) was President of Honduras from 1 February 1925 to 1 February 1929. Barahona was a member of the National Party of Honduras (PNH). The PNH nominated Barahona as their presidential candidate in 1924. The other major political party, the Liberal Party of Honduras (PLH), refused to nominate a candidate, which led to Barahona winning the election with 99 percent of the vote.
