1922 New Year Honours
The New Year Honours 1922 were appointments by King George V to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by members of the British Empire. George V
George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert; 3 June 1865 – 20 January 1936) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936. Born during the reign of his grandmother Queen Victoria, George was the second son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, and was third in the line of succession to the British throne behind his father and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor. From 1877 to 1892, George served in the Royal Navy, until the unexpected death of his elder brother in early 1892 put him directly in line for the throne. On Victoria's death in 1901, George's father ascended the throne as Edward VII, and George was created Prince of Wales. He became king-emperor on his father's death in 1910. Warwick And Leamington (UK Parliament Constituency)
Warwick and Leamington is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since the 2017 general election by Matt Western, of the Labour Party. The towns of Warwick and Royal Leamington Spa are still distinct, however, and form, in the modern seat, a contiguous urban area. Warwick, with its historic castle, is an internationally advertised tourist destination, while Leamington's economy is more dependent on storage, distribution, manufacturing, processing, engineering and industry. Epsom was a borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. From its creation in 1885 until its abolition in 1974, it was won by eight Conservatives. The winner took less than 50% of the votes in its contested elections once, in 1945, receiving 49.9% of the vote in a three-party contest. Rowland Blades, 1st Baron Ebbisham
George Rowland Blades, 1st Baron Ebbisham, Order of the British Empire, GBE (15 April 1868 – 24 May 1953) was an England, English Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician, printer, and Lord Mayor of London. Blades was born in Sydenham, London, Sydenham, Kent, and educated at King's College School. In 1886, he joined the family printing business, Blades, East & Blades Ltd, which had been founded by his grandfather, rising to become its chairman. In 1913 he was elected to the Corporation of London. Wolverhampton West was a borough constituency in the town of Wolverhampton in the West Midlands of England. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. History The constituency was created by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 for the 1885 general election, when the former two-seat Wolverhampton constituency was divided into three single-member constituencies. It was abolished for the 1950 general election, when it was largely replaced by the new Wolverhampton South West constituency. Sir Alfred Frederick Bird, 1st Baronet (27 July 1849 – 7 February 1922) was an English chemist, food manufacturer and Conservative Party politician. He is best remembered as the proprietor of Alfred Bird & Sons, a company founded by his father Alfred Bird, the inventor of baking powder and the powdered custard that bears his name. Early life and career Bird was born in Birmingham and educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham. In 1867 he joined his father's company. In 1878 he took full control of the company following the death of his father, and began an ambitious programme of modernisation and expansion. Bird also continued to innovate with new products such as a powdered egg substitute, jelly crystals and tablet jellies. In 1900 Alfred Bird & Sons Ltd became a public limited company. Sir Robert Aske, 1st Baronet
Sir Robert William Aske, 1st Baronet JP (29 December 1872 – 10 March 1954) was a barrister and Liberal Party politician in the United Kingdom. Family Aske was born a son of Edward Aske. In 1899 he married Edith McGregor. She died in 1900. In 1909 he married Edith Cockerline. They had two sons and two daughters. She died in 1918.(1 December 2007). The Royal Dublin Society (RDS) ( ga, Cumann Ríoga Bhaile Átha Cliath) is an Irish philanthropic organisation and members club which was founded as the 'Dublin Society' on 25 June 1731 with the aim to see Ireland thrive culturally and economically. The RDS is synonymous with its 160,000 m2 campus in Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland. The premises include the ' RDS Arena', 'RDS Simmonscourt', 'RDS Main Hall' and other venues which are used regularly for exhibitions, concerts and sporting events like the Dublin Horse Show or as playground for the Leinster Rugby team. Sheriff Of County Dublin
The Sheriff of County Dublin (or (High) Sheriff of the County of Dublin) was the Sovereign's judicial representative in County Dublin. Initially, an office for a lifetime, assigned by the Sovereign, the Sheriff became an annual appointment following the Provisions of Oxford in 1258. The first recorded Sheriff was Ralph Eure, appointed in that year. The next recorded Sheriff was Sir David de Offington, who was Sheriff in 1282. Besides his judicial importance, the sheriff had ceremonial and administrative functions and executed High Court Writs. The first Shrievalties were established before the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 and date back to Saxon times. In 1908, an Order in Council made the Lord-Lieutenant the Sovereign's prime representative in a county and reduced the Sheriff's precedence. Thomas Kennedy Laidlaw
Thomas Kennedy Laidlaw PC (Ire) (8 November 1864 – 9 September 1943) was a Scottish-born Irish racehorse owner and breeder. Laidlaw was educated at Park School and the University of Glasgow, but later moved to Ireland. His racing colours were black with gold spots. He bred Aboyeur, winner of the 1913 Epsom Derby, and Gregalach and Grakle, winners of the Grand National in 1929 and 1931 respectively, although he did not own any of them at the time of their wins. Henry Givens Burgess
Henry Givens Burgess PC(Ire) (6 April 1859 – 23 April 1937) was an Irish railway executive and politician. Burgess was born at Finnoe House, County Tipperary. He joined the Dublin and South Eastern Railway as a junior clerk in 1873. In 1878 he transferred to the London and North Western Railway, which also operated in Ireland, with which he stayed until 1923. From 1878 to 1883 he worked for the Irish Traffic Manager in Dublin, from 1883 to 1893 he was the company's representative in the North and Midlands of Ireland, and from 1893 to 1898 he was the company's chief representative in Scotland, based in Glasgow. In 1898 he was appointed Irish Traffic Manager himself and moved back to Dublin, occupying the post until 1920. In this post he was also manager of the Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Railway.
