The states and territories are federated administrative divisions in Australia, ruled by regional governments that constitute the second level of governance between the federal government and local governments. William Edgar (Australian Politician)
William Haslem Edgar (21 January 1858 – 6 June 1948) was an Australian politician. He was born at St Arnaud to Irish-born engineer Edward Edgar and Mary, ''née'' Haslem. He attended St Arnaud Public School and Stawell Grammar School before working in a Melbourne warehouse for five years. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Cecelia Bingley, around 1887. He worked as a draper in Dunolly and served on the borough council from 1885 to 1886 before moving to Melbourne in around 1888 to work as an estate agent. In 1902 he was elected to Malvern City Council, serving as mayor from 1906 to 1907 and leaving the council in 1909. He was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council in 1904 as the non-Labor member for Melbourne West, holding the seat until his defeat in 1913. During this period he was minister without portfolio from 1909 to 1912 and Minister for Public Works and Health from 1912 to 1913. Nelson Province (Australia)
Nelson Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council (Australia). It was created in the wide-scale redistribution of Provinces 1882 when Central and Eastern Provinces were abolished and ten new Provinces were created. Its area included Camperdown, Ararat and Mortlake. Nelson was created and defined by the Legislative Council Act 1881 (taking effect from the 1882 elections) as consisting of the following divisions: Hampden, Mortlake, Ararat Shire, Ararat Borough, Ripon, Grenville, Ballaarat, Lexton, Avoca, Stawell Shire and Stawell Borough. Arthur Disney
James Herbert Arthur Disney (8 December 1864 – 28 July 1943) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat West to carter and tailor Charles Disney and Sarah Darley. He left school at fourteen to become a boilermaker, and from around 1886 worked in Melbourne. On 22 April 1886 he married Isabella Christina Hill, with whom he had five children. He left Melbourne in 1889, finding difficulty due to his union connections. He spent time as a fruiterer and woodyard proprietor, and from around 1898 was a second-hand furniture dealer. He served on South Melbourne City Council from 1908 to 1918 and was mayor from 1915 to 1916. In 1916 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as a Labor member, representing Melbourne West Province. He was a minister without portfolio from July to November 1924 and from 1927 to 1928. His son James was elected to the Council in 1940 for the United Australia Party. Arthur Robinson (Australian Politician)
Sir Arthur Robinson KCMG (23 April 1872 – 17 May 1945) was an Australian politician, at different times a member of the upper and lower houses of the Victorian parliament and a federal MP. Early life Robinson was born at Carlton, Victoria, the son of journalist Anthony Bennett Robinson and Harriet, née Barton, the sister of Sir Edmund Barton. He attended Scotch College (where he was later Chairman of the School Council) before studying law at the University of Melbourne. He became a barrister and solicitor in 1896, partnering William Bruce in the firm that was to become Arthur Robinson & Co. (a forerunner of modern firm Allens). Robinson became known as a free trader and a conservative (in contrast to his uncle Edmund Barton), but he was also an ardent federalist. On 18 April 1899 he married Annie Summers Puckle at Malvern. George Wales (businessman)
Sir Alexander George Wales (11 October 1885 – 31 May 1962) was an Australian businessman and politician. He was born in Richmond to contractor Alexander Wright Wales and Rosanna Poynton; his uncle Alexander Poynton was federal treasurer. He attended state school at Brunswick and studied at night school while working as a labourer on the railways. From 1903 he worked as a public service clerk and from 1907 as a secretary for the Albion Quarry Company. In 1911 he married Ethel May Bromet, with whom he had a daughter. He eventually rose to the position of managing director of the Albion Quarry Company, and also had the directorship of Alba Petroleum and Ampol. From 1914 to 1924 he served on Brunswick City Council (mayor from 1917 to 1918) and from 1925 to 1954 on Melbourne City Council (mayor from 1934 to 1937). Esmond Kiernan
Esmond Laurence Kiernan (25 December 1881 – 19 April 1967) was an Australian politician. He was born in Fitzroy to schoolteachers John Joseph Kiernan and Margaret MacDonald. He attended state schools and became a furniture retailer. He was a founding member of the Clerks' Union and joined the Labor Party in 1909. He was a follower of Henry George and an opponent of capital punishment and, from 1917 to 1920, served on Collingwood City Council. On 31 January 1917, he married Eileen Mary Harrison, with whom he had four children. In 1919, Kiernan was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne North Province. From 1929 to 1932 he was an Honorary Minister in the Hogan Labor government and, for a short period, was Minister for Sustenance. William James Beckett CBE (10 June 1870 – 7 May 1965) was an Australian politician. Born in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran, to Irish-born taxi proprietor Samuel Beckett and Scottish-born Margaret Cameron, he attended both state and private schools before becoming a second-hand furniture dealer at Fitzroy with his brother Henry. On 22 February 1893, he married Alice Maud Street, with whom he had two children. In 1914, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as Labor member for Melbourne North. That year he was also elected to Fitzroy City Council, where he served until 1932 (mayor 1921–22, 1925–26). From July to November 1924 he was a minister without portfolio in the Victorian government, and from May 1927 to November 1928, and from December 1929 to June 1931, he was Minister for Forests and Public Health. Daniel McNamara
Daniel Laurence McNamara (28 March 1876 – 28 December 1947) was an Australian politician. He was born at Pomborneit to farmer Michael McNamara and Mary Taff. He worked as a produce agent in Melbourne from 1906 to 1909, and in 1907 joined the Australian Workers' Union (AWU). He was involved in founding the Rural Workers Union in 1909 and represented both unions on the Trades Hall Council. From 1909 to 1947 he served on the Labor Party state executive. On 1 May 1915 he married Florence May Spinks, with whom he had three children. He was instrumental in the merger of the Rural Workers Union with the AWU and the Queensland General Workers Union (1912–13), and served on Berwick Shire Council from 1910 to 1910 (president 1906–07).
