The 1919 Manchester Rusholme by-election was a by-election, parliamentary by-election held in October 1919 for the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, British House of Commons United Kingdom constituencies, constituency of Manchester Rusholme. The by-election was important for shaping the future Labour Party attitude to electoral relations with the Liberal Party. Vacancy In September 1919 the Conservative MP Robert Burdon Stoker died. He had previously represented Manchester South (UK Parliament constituency), Manchester South since March 1918. At the 1918 general election he had been in receipt of the Coalition Government coupon. John Henry Thorpe
John Henry Thorpe OBE KC (7 August 1887 – 31 October 1944) was a British Conservative politician. Thorpe was the eldest son of the Venerable John Henry Thorpe, Archdeacon of Macclesfield. He was educated at St John's School, Leatherhead and Trinity College, Oxford. Thorpe trained as a barrister (later becoming Recorder of Blackburn) and entered the Commons in 1919 as MP for Manchester Rusholme.
