Eduardo Lopes
Eduardo Lopes (1917−1997) was a Portuguese professional road and track cyclist. Short biography Lopes was born on 22 December 1917 in the civil parish of Socorro (Lisbon). In 1937 he began his career as a rider for the CUF team, as an amateur. In 1939 he became a professional. From 1937 to 1947, he had 45 wins on famous circuits at that time, including Bairrada, Mealhada, Torres Vedras, Malveira, and Round to Lisbon, with the highlight being his victory in 1942 in the classic Porto-Lisboa, performed in a single step, with an approximate duration of 10 hours, over a distance of about 330 km. This was the second longest world cycling route, after the Bordeaux-Paris (560 km) and therefore very prestigious both inside and outside Portugal. Guilherme De Vasconcelos Abreu
Guilherme de Vasconcelos Abreu (1842-1907) was a Portuguese writer, cartographer and orientalist. Biography Guilherme de Vasconcelos Abreu was born in Coimbra in 1842. Abreu spent a lifetime studying languages. He travelled to Brazil and went on several journeys to Portuguese colonies in India. He was particularly interested in the ancient language of Sanskrit. He was involved with redesigning the Portuguese language in terms of its spelling. One of his students, Aniceto dos Reis Gonçalves Viana, led the commission that advised on how the spelling of Portuguese should be reformed. This change was successfully made, but created a rift with Brazil who continued to use the traditional spelling. He was elected to the Portuguese Academy of Sciences on 9 February 1887. A book he wrote in 1902 consisted of translations from ancient books, including the Sutta-pitaka, Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Hermenegildo Capelo
Hermenegildo de Brito Capelo (Palmela, 1841 – Lisbon, 1917) was an officer in the Portuguese Navy and a Portuguese explorer, helping to chart territory between Angola and Mozambique in southern Central Africa that was unknown to Europeans in the 1870s and 1880s. Alongside Roberto Ivens, he is famous for being the first European to cross Central Africa from coast to coast between Angola and Mozambique. Hermenegildo Capelo later rose to become aide-de-camp to King Luis I of Portugal and afterwards to King Carlos I and, later still, vice-admiral. His military career ended in 1910 when King Manuel II of Portugal was exiled. Early life Hermenegildo de Brito Capelo was born in Palmela, Portugal, a town about south of Lisbon. António Teixeira De Sousa
António Teixeira de Sousa, 2nd Count of Sousa Palmela (5 May 1857 in Celeirós, Sabrosa – 5 June 1917 in Celeirós, Sabrosa; ) was a Portuguese medical doctor and politician during the Constitutional Monarchy. He graduated in Medicine at the University of Porto, in 1883. A member of the conservative Regenerator Party, he was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies, in 1889. He was later minister of the Navy and Overseas (1900–1903), and, twice, of Finance (1903–1904, 1906). António José de Ávila (7 November 1842, Horta – 18 March 1917, Lisbon) was a military officer, politician, member of the Portuguese nobility (made Marquis of Ávila, following the death of his illustrious uncle) and benemerit.
