1912 World Figure Skating Championships
The World Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union in which figure skaters compete for the title of World Champion. Men's competitions took place from 16 to 17 February in Manchester, United Kingdom. Ladies' competitions took place from 27 to 28 January in Davos, Switzerland. Manchester
Manchester () is a city in Greater Manchester, England. It had a population of 552,000 in 2021. Arthur Cumming (skater)
Arthur Warren Jack Cumming (8 May 1889 – 9 May 1914) was a British figure skater. He came in second of the three participants in the special figures event at the 1908 Summer Olympics, earning him a silver medal. This was the only year in which special figures was an Olympic event. Walter Jakobsson
Walter Andreas Jakobsson (6 February 1882 – 10 June 1957) was a Finnish figure skater, and the oldest figure skating Olympic champion (at age 38). As a single skater, he won the Finnish national championship in 1910 and 1911. In 1910, he partnered with German figure skater Ludowika Eilers. As pairs skaters, they won the World Championship in 1911, 1914, and 1923, and the Olympic gold in 1920. They finished second at the 1924 Olympics and fifth in 1928. Jakobsson studied engineering in Berlin, where he met Eilers in 1907. They married in 1911, and in 1916 moved to Helsinki, where Jakobsson got a job of the technical director of Kone OY (now Konecranes), a leading manufacturers of cranes. He held that post until retiring in 1947. Ludowika Eilers
Ludovika Antje Margareta Jakobsson-Eilers (née Eilers, 25 July 1884 – 1 November 1968) was a German-Finnish figure skater. Competing in pair skating with her husband Walter Jakobsson, she won the gold medal at the 1920 Summer Olympics, where she was the only German-born athlete, and became the oldest female figure skating Olympic champion. The pair also earned three world titles, in 1911, 1914 and 1923, and finished second and fifth at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics, respectively. Eilers also had some success in single skating, winning a bronze medal at the 1911 World Championships. Early years Eilers met Jakobsson in 1907 while he was studying engineering in Berlin. Dorothy Greenhough-Smith
Dorothy Greenhough-Smith (27 September 1882 – 9 May 1965) was a British figure skater. She was born Dorothy Vernon Muddock in Stokesley, North Riding of Yorkshire, the daughter of writer James Edward Preston Muddock, and married publisher/editor Herbert Greenhough Smithhis Times obituary mentions her skating prowess in 1900. Greenhough-Smith won the bronze medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics, the first Olympics where figure skating was contested. She was the 1912 World silver medalist, which was the first silver medal in ladies skating for Great Britain (Madge Syers having won the silver in ''men's'' singles). Herbert Yglesias
Henry Yglesias (14 May 1867 – 20 August 1949) was a British figure skater. He competed in the men's singles event at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Along with fellow skater Edgar Syers, Yglesias lobbied for the adoption of the international style of skating to become the standard in England. They requested that the International Skating Union hold the third edition of the World Championships in London in 1898. Yglesias was part of the National Skating Association for more than 40 years, becoming a leading judge in skating. He also became a solicitor, and was a partner in the firm Lewis & Yglesias. Horatio Torromé
Horatio Tertuliano Torromé, also credited as Henri Torromé (1861 – 16 September 1920), was a British figure skater who also competed for Argentina. Torromé was born in Rio de Janeiro to an Argentine father and a Brazilian mother, and not long after his birth the family emigrated to London, England, this is where Torromé took up ice skating at his local club which was the Prince's Skating Club in Knightsbridge, London. Torromé competed at the 1902 World Figure Skating Championships in London and he finished in fourth place out of four starters, in 1905 and 1906 he came first at the British Figure Skating Championships. Although Torromé qualified to represent Great Britain at the 1908 Summer Olympics, but he opted to compete for his fathers home country and so becoming the only representative for Argentina at the 1908 Summer Olympics held in London.
