The 1908 U.S. Open was the fourteenth U.S. Open (golf), U.S. Open, held August 27–29 at Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, northeast of Boston. Fred McLeod (golfer), Fred McLeod defeated 1899 U.S. Open (golf), 1899 champion Willie Smith (golfer), Willie Smith in an 18-hole playoff to win his only Men's major golf championships, major title. High winds on Thursday caused scores in the first two rounds to soar, with only two players managing to break 80. Herbert Haydn Barker (1883 – 14 June 1924) was an English professional golfer and golf course architect who played in the early 20th century. Barker's best performance came in the 1909 U.S. Open when he tied for seventh place. He had an identical finish in the 1911 U.S. Open. Early life Barker was born in Huddersfield, England, in 1883. Walter J. Travis (January 10, 1862 – July 31, 1927) was an American amateur golfer during the early 1900s. He was also a noted golf journalist and publisher, an innovator in all aspects of golf, a teacher, and golf course architect. Golfing career Travis was born in Maldon, Australia. He arrived in New York City in 1886 as a 23-year-old representative of the Australian-based McLean Brothers and Rigg exporters of hardware and construction products. Travis married Anne Bent of Middleton, Connecticut, on January 9, 1890, and later that year, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Percy Frederick Barrett (1 January 1881 – 20 January 1927) was a Canadian professional golfer of English birth who played in the early 20th century. His best finish in a major tournament, a tie for third place, came in the 1905 U.S. Open at Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. Barrett won the 1907 Canadian Open as well as the 1923 and 1925 Canadian PGA Championship. Early life Barrett was born in Matlock, Derbyshire, England, on 1 January 1881 to William Barrett (1860–1938) and his then girlfriend (but later wife) Emma Barrett née Kiddy (1857–1927). At the time of his birth, Percy's mother was unmarried and living with her parents, therefore his birth name was Percy Frederick Kiddy.
