1899 All England Badminton Championships
The 1899 All England Championships was a badminton tournament held in the Scottish Drill Hall at the London Scottish Rifles Headquarters in Buckingham Gate, Westminster, London, England on 4 April 1899.http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/archive/ There were no singles events staged. Origins Following the first known open badminton tournament at the Guildford Drill Hall during 1898 the Badminton Association (BA) decided to stage the first All England Championships on 4 April 1899. The one day tournament was at the Drill Hall at the London Scottish Rifles Headquarters in Buckingham Gate and consisted of four courts with the two end courts having balconies over hanging them. The courts were basic very with nets only 16 feet wide, posts with extended canes and chalked lines. The principal event organisers were Mr Richard Fleming St Andrew St John (Honorary Secretary of the BA) and Mr Percy Buckley (Secretary of the Guildford Badminton Association and President of the BA). All England Open Badminton Championships
The All England Open Badminton Championships is the world's oldest badminton tournament, held annually in England. With the introduction of the BWF's latest grading system, it was given Super Series status in 2007, upgraded to Super Series Premier status in 2011. The world's first open tournament was held in the English town of Guildford in 1898, the success of which paved the way for the All England's inaugural edition, which was held at London's Horticultural Halls in 1899. Although the inaugural edition consisted of just the doubles format, the singles were introduced from the second edition onward. It was eventually considered – especially after the first Thomas Cup series in 1949 – the unofficial world championship of the sport until 1977, when the International Badminton Federation launched its official championships. Edith Johnson (tennis Player)
Emily Frances Godschall Johnson better known as Edith Johnson (1874–1950) was an English field hockey, tennis and badminton player. She was the first women's captain of the England hockey team and the runner-up at the 1910 Wimbledon Championships – Women's singles. Johnson played for the Molesey Hockey Club and was involved in England's first official match against Ireland in 1896. She was an all-round sportswoman playing tennis at Wimbledon where she competed in the singles from 1901 to 1914. Ellen Mary Stawell-Brown (married name Ellen Hemsted) (1878–1958) was a British female badminton and tennis player. She has notably competed mainly in the All England Open Badminton Championships and Wimbledon Championships. Ellen Mary is the first woman ever to serve overarm in the Ladies' singles at the Wimbledon Championships. Ellen Mary Stawell-Brown represented United Kingdom simultaneously in both international badminton competitions and Tennis competitions during the early 20th century (in 1900s). She competed at the Wimbledon Championships in 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 and 1905. Her notable achievement including the mixed doubles title victory along with F. S. George William Vidal
George William Vidal (23 September 1845 – 13 October 1907) was a British lawyer who worked in the Indian Civil Services in the Bombay Presidency and contributed to natural history studies from the Konkan region, and was involved in popularizing the modern form of badminton in India and in establishing the formal rules of the game. He observed and collected bird and snake specimens and collaborated with other naturalists in the region. A couple of bird subspecies are named after him.
