1898 Harvard Crimson Football Team
The 1898 Harvard Crimson football team was an American football team that represented Harvard University as an independent during the 1898 college football season. In their second year under head coach William Cameron Forbes, the Crimson compiled an 11–0 record, shut out seven of eleven opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 257 to 19. There was no contemporaneous system in 1898 for determining a national champion. However, Harvard was retroactively named as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, and National Championship Foundation. Princeton, which finished the 1898 season 11–0–1, was named champion by one selector, Parke H. Davis. William Cameron Forbes
William Cameron Forbes (May 21, 1870 – December 24, 1959) was an American investment banker and diplomat. He served as Governor-General of the Philippines, governor-general of the Philippines from 1909 to 1913 and ambassador of the United States to Japan from 1930 to 1932. He was the son of William Hathaway Forbes, president of the Bell Telephone Company, who was part of the Boston Brahmin family that made its fortune trading in China, and wife Edith Emerson, a daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson. He was grandson Sarah Hathaway and John Murray Forbes and Lidian Jackson and Ralph Waldo Emerson. After education at the Milton Academy and Boston's Hopkinson School and graduation from Harvard in 1892, he embarked on a business career, eventually becoming a partner in J. M. Forbes and Company. Percy Haughton
Percy Duncan Haughton (July 11, 1876 – October 27, 1924) was an American football and baseball player and coach. He served as head football coach at Cornell University from 1899 to 1900, at Harvard University from 1908 to 1916, and at Columbia University from 1923 to 1924, compiling a career college football record of 97–17–6. The Harvard Crimson claimed national champions for three of the seasons that Haughton coached: 1910, 1912, and 1913. Haughton was also Harvard's head baseball coach in 1915 and part owner of the Boston Braves from 1916 to 1918. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1951. The 1898 Carlisle Indians football team represented the Carlisle Indian Industrial School as an independent during the 1898 college football season. Led by John A. Hall in his first only season as head coach, the Indians compiled a 6–4 record and outscored opponents by a total of 203 to 99. West Point is the oldest continuously occupied military post in the United States. The Plain (West Point)
The Plain is the parade field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The flat terrain of the Plain is in contrast to the varied and hilly terrain of the remainder of the campus. The Plain rises approximately above the Hudson River and has been the site of the longest continually occupied U.S. Army garrison in America since 1778. In its early years, the entire academy was located on the Plain and it was used for varying activities ranging from drill and mounted cavalry maneuvers to an encampment site for summer training to a sports venue. The 1898 Army Cadets football team represented the United States Military Academy in the 1898 college football season. In their second season under head coach Herman Koehler, the Cadets compiled a 3–2–1 record and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 90 to 51. The Cadets' two losses came against undefeated co-national champion Harvard and Yale. The Army–Navy Game was not played in 1898. Four Army Cadets were honored on the 1898 College Football All-America Team.
