1898 Army Cadets Football Team
The 1898 Army Cadets football team represented the United States Military Academy in the 1898 college football season. In their second season under head coach Herman Koehler, the Cadets compiled a 3–2–1 record and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 90 to 51. The Cadets' two losses came against undefeated co-national champion Harvard and Yale. The Army–Navy Game was not played in 1898. Four Army Cadets were honored on the 1898 College Football All-America Team. Fullback Charles Romeyn was a consensus first-team All-American, receiving first-team honors from Caspar Whitney and the ''New York Sun''. Quarterback Leon Kromer, tackle Robert Foy, and end Walter Smith were recognized as third-team All-Americans by Walter Camp. Herman Koehler
Herman John Koehler (December 14, 1859 – July 1, 1927) was an American football coach, athletics administrator, and United States Army officer. He served as the head football coach at the United States Military Academy from 1897 to 1900, compiling a record of 19–11–3. Koehler was also the Master of the Sword from 1885 to 1923 and director of West Point's first program of physical education instruction. Due to his long-serving tenure and his impact on the Department of Physical Education, he is held in high regard and is considered the "father of the Department of Physical Education" at West Point. He is buried in the West Point Cemetery. Caspar Whitney
Caspar William Whitney (September 2, 1864 – January 18, 1929) was an American author, editor, explorer, outdoorsman and war correspondent. He originated the concept of the All-American team in college football in 1889 when he worked for ''Harper's Magazine''. Biography Caspar Whitney was the son of John Henry Whitney (1833-1869) and Amelia D. Goldermann, born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was educated at Saint Mathew's College in California. During the Spanish–American War, Whitney submitted articles from the front in Cuba. At the Battle of Las Guasimas, he accompanied General Young's 1st and 10th (Regular) Cavalry. 1898 Princeton Tigers Football Team
The 1898 Princeton Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Princeton University as an independent during the 1898 college football season. The team compiled an 11–0–1 record, shut out 11 of 12 opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 266 to 5. Art Hillebrand was the team captain. There was no coach. There was no contemporaneous system in 1898 for determining a national champion. However, Princeton was retroactively named as the national champion by one selector, Parke H. Davis, a Princeton alumnus. Harvard finished with an 11–0 record and was named as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, and National Championship Foundation. Walter Camp
Walter Chauncey Camp (April 7, 1859 – March 14, 1925) was an American football player, coach, and sports writer known as the "Father of American Football". Among a long list of inventions, he created the sport's line of scrimmage and the system of downs. With John Heisman, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Pop Warner, Fielding H. Yost, and George Halas, Camp was one of the most accomplished persons in the early history of American football. He attended Yale College, where he played and coached college football. Camp's Yale teams of 1888, 1891, and 1892 have been recognized as national champions. Camp was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach during 1951. Walter Driscol Smith (November 16, 1875September 20, 1955) was an American football player and military officer. He was a consensus All-American football player in 1900 while enrolled at the United States Military Academy. He served in the United States Army until 1946, reaching the rank of Brigadier-General. Charles Romeyn (American Football)
Charles Annesley Romeyn (December 14, 1874 – January 31, 1950) was an American football player and United States Army officer. He played for the Army Black Knights football team and was selected as a consensus first-team fullback on the 1898 College Football All-America Team. Early years Romeyn was born in 1874 in Indian Territory, in what is now the state of Oklahoma. He was the son of Major Romeyn. Leon Kromer
Leon Benjamin Kromer (June 25, 1876 – September 6, 1966) was a United States Army officer and American football coach. From 1934 to 1938, Major General Kromer was the Chief of U. S. Cavalry. 1898 College Football All-America Team
The 1898 College Football All-America team is composed of American football players who were selected as the best players at their positions by various organizations that chose College Football All-America Teams that season. The organizations that chose the teams included ''Collier's Weekly'' selected by Walter Camp and the '' Syracuse Herald''. The 1898 season marked the first time players from the west were named to the All-American teams.
