1897–98 FC Basel Season
The FC Basel 1897–98 season was their fifth season since the club's foundation on 15 November 1893. The club's chairman was Charlie Volderauer and he was chairman between 1896 and 1900. He was the third chairman in the club's history, following Roland Geldner (1893–1896) and Emanuel Schiess (1896). FC Basel played their home games in the Landhof, in the Wettstein neighborhood of Kleinbasel (lesser Basel). The official Swiss championship had not yet been called to into life. Although this season a first, unofficial, competition was played, Basel did not compete. FC Basel
Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Basel have competed in European competitions every season since 1999–2000. They have qualified for the Group stages of the Champions League more times than any other Swiss club – a total of seven times – and are the only Swiss club to have ever qualified to the Group stages directly. Josy Ebinger
Josy Ebinger (26 March 1880 – 18 September 1955) was a Swiss-French businessman and founder member of FC Basel. He was long-time player in their first team and played as defender and midfielder. He was active as a club official in various offices and was club chairman from October 1902 to May 1903. He was vice president of the Swiss Football Association in 1900. As businessman he was a well-known personality in the city and held high honorary positions in his hometown. Biography Ebinger was member of the Basel rowing club and during a visit to England had seen the new football game. He had also been member of the RTV/Realschüler-Turnverein (secondary school student gymnastics club) and had been instructed over the game by his gymnastics teacher, Adolf Glaz, at the then secondary school. Eric Mory
Eric Mory (born 17 April 1879) was a Swiss footballer who played as striker or midfielder during the 1890s and early 1900s. Football career FC Basel was founded on 15 November 1893 and Mory joined the club about three years later, during their 1896–97 season. Mory played his first game for the club in the away game on 8 November 1896 as Basel were defeated 1–2 by Grasshopper Club. Mory stayed with the club for two seasons. During the first season he played in six of the team's seven matches and in the second he played in nine out of ten matches. The last game that Mory played for Basel was on 8 May 1898 as Basel won 2–0 against FC Fortuna Zürich. His teammate John Tollmann acted as referee in that match. Albert Linder (born 8 November 1877) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel during the 1890s. He played mainly in the position as striker, but also as midfielder. Rudolf La Roche (born 1 October 1880) was a Swiss footballer who played as midfielder in the late 1890s. He was a well-known businessman and became president of the local riding school society.
