1870 Birthday Honours
The 1870 Birthday Honours were appointments by Queen Victoria to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of the British Empire. The appointments were made to celebrate the official birthday of the Queen, and were published in ''The London Gazette'' on 31 May 1870. The recipients of honours are displayed here as they were styled before their new honour, and arranged by honour, with classes (Knight, Knight Grand Cross, ''etc.'') and then divisions (Military, Civil, ''etc.'') as appropriate. Queen Victoria
Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until Death and state funeral of Queen Victoria, her death in 1901. Her reign of 63 years and 216 days was longer than that of List of monarchs in Britain by length of reign, any previous British monarch and is known as the Victorian era. Alexander John Arbuthnot
Sir Alexander John Arbuthnot (11 October 1822 – 10 June 1907) was a British official and writer. Early life He was born at Farmhill, County Mayo, the third son of Alexander Arbuthnot and his second wife Margaret Phoebe Bingham, daughter of George Bingham. Charles George Arbuthnot was his brother and Major-General George Bingham Arbuthnot a half-brother. He was uncle of Brigadier-general Alexander George Arbuthnot. Arbuthnot was educated at Rugby School. Birthday Honours
The Birthday Honours, in some Commonwealth realms, mark the reigning British monarch's official birthday by granting various individuals appointment into national or dynastic orders or the award of decorations and medals. The honours are presented by the monarch or a viceregal representative. The Birthday Honours are one of two annual honours lists, along with the New Year Honours. All royal honours are published in the relevant gazette. History Honours have been awarded with few exceptions on the sovereign's birthday since at least 1860, during the reign of Queen Victoria. There was no Birthday Honours list issued in 1876, which brought "a good deal of disappointment" and even rebuke for the Ministry of Defence. Henry Edward Landor Thuillier
Sir Henry Edward Landor Thuillier (10 July 1813 – 6 May 1906) was Surveyor General of India. Under his direction, 796,928 square miles of India were surveyed, including difficult mountainous, forest, and desert regions, often for the first time. He was responsible for the printing in 1854 of the first postage stamps valid throughout India. Thuillier was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1869, made a CSI in May 1870, and knighted in June 1879. Early life Thuillier was born at Bath on 10 July 1813, was youngest of eleven children (five sons and six daughters) of John Pierre Thuillier, Baron of Malapert, and merchant of Cadiz and Bath, by his wife Julia, daughter of James Burrow of Exeter. An elder sister, Julia, married Walter Savage Landor in 1811. He was descended from Huguenots who, on the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, first settled in Geneva. Henry Errington Longden
General Sir Henry Errington Longden (14 January 1819 – 29 January 1890) was a British Army officer who served as Adjutant-General in India. Military career Educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Longden was commissioned into the 10th Regiment of Foot on 16 September 1836. He fought at the Battle of Sobraon in February 1846 during the First Anglo-Sikh War as well as the Siege of Multan in Autumn 1848 and the Battle of Gujrat in February 1849 during the Second Anglo-Sikh War. He also took part in the Siege of Lucknow in Autumn 1857 and the subsequent relief of Azamgarh during the Indian Rebellion. He became Adjutant-General in India in January 1866 before retiring in 1880. He was given the colonelcy of the Hampshire Regiment in 1883, transferring in 1888 to be Colonel in Chief of the Lincolnshire Regiment until his death. Jai Kishan Das
Raja Jai Kishan Das Chaube, CSI, Rai Bahadur (24 November 1832 – 30 April 1905) was an Indian administrator and close associate of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, founder of Aligarh Muslim University. He was born on 24 November 1832 at Moradabad to Brindaban Das Choube in a respectable Hindu family. After completing his education, he joined Indian Civil Service and later retired as Deputy Collector of Aligarh district. He was awarded with Mutiny Medal in 1858. In 1860, received the title of Raja and Rai Bahadur so came to be known as Raja Jai Kishan Das Bahadur. He was created C.S.I. on 31 May 1870. He grew close friendship with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University. Edward Clive Bayley
Sir Edward Clive Bayley (17 October 1821 – 30 April 1884), was an Anglo-Indian civil servant, statesman and archæologist. Early life Bayley was the only son of Edward Clive Bayley, of Hope Hall, Eccles, Lancashire, and Margaret Fenton. He was born at St. Petersburg in October 1821, and educated at the East India Company College. Career Bayley entered the Indian civil service in 1842, and served at Allahabad, Meerut, Bulandshahr, and Rohtak. On the annexation of the Punjab he was appointed deputy-commissioner at Gujarat in April 1849, and in November under-secretary to the government of India in the foreign department, under Sir Henry Elliot. Two years later he became deputy-commissioner of the Kangra district, but in 1854 was compelled by poor health to take leave. William Grey (governor)
Sir William Grey (1818 – 15 May 1878) was an English administrator who worked with the East India Company in India and served as lieutenant-governor of Bengal from 1867 when he succeeded Sir Cecil Beadon and later as governor of Jamaica. Grey was the fourth son of Edward Grey (bishop), Edward Grey, bishop of Hereford while his mother was the daughter of James Croft of Greenham Lodge, near Newbury, Berkshire. Grey studied at Christ Church, Oxford, but did not complete studies and joined the war office as a clerk. Nominated to work in the Bengal civil service he entered Haileybury College in January 1839 and passed out in July 1840. During his first term, he was rusticated for late night parties in his room but made up for it in later terms. Ghulam Muhammad Sultan Sahib
Prince Sahibzada Sayyid Shareef Ghulam Muhammad Sultan Khan Sahib, (March 1795 in Srirangapatnam – 11 August 1872 in Russapagla, Calcutta) was the fourteenth son of Tipu Sultan. Deported to Calcutta in 1806 along with the remainder of his family 7 years after the defeat and death of his father, he was eventually recognised by the Government of India as the official head of the family and successor to his father.
