William Henry Harrison
William Henry Harrison (February 9, 1773April 4, 1841) was an American military officer and politician who served as the ninth president of the United States. Harrison died just 31 days after his inauguration in 1841, and had the shortest presidency in United States history. He was also the first United States president to die in office, and a brief constitutional crisis resulted as presidential succession was not then fully defined in the United States Constitution. Harrison was the last president born as a British subject in the Thirteen Colonies and was the paternal grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president of the United States. Philemon Beecher
Philemon Beecher (March 19, 1776November 30, 1839) was an Anglo-American attorney and legislator who was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio. Biography Philemon Beecher was born in Oxford in the Connecticut Colony, the son of Abraham Beecher and Desire Tolles. Philemon Beecher received a classical education, read law and was admitted to the bar. Beecher moved to Lancaster, Ohio, in 1801 and continued the practice of law, being admitted to the bar while Ohio was still the Northwest Territory. He was the leading lawyer of the Lancaster bar for twenty-five years. It was in his office that lawyer and political figure Thomas Ewing studied law. Beecher was often a barrister at the courthouse in Marietta, Ohio. Beecher was a member of Scioto Lodge No 2 Free and Accepted Masons in Ohio. John Sloane (Ohio Politician)
John Sloane (1779May 15, 1856) was a U.S. Representative from Ohio and later the Treasurer of the United States. Born in York, Pennsylvania, Sloane moved to Ohio in early youth. He completed preparatory studies. He served as member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1803–1805 and again in 1807. Sloane served as colonel of militia in the War of 1812. United States receiver of public moneys at Canton, Ohio from 1808 to 1816 and at Wooster 1816-1819. Sloane was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses, reelected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, and elected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses (March 4, 1819 – March 4, 1829). Peter Hitchcock (judge)
Peter Marshall Hitchcock (October 19, 1781 – March 4, 1853) was an attorney, teacher, farmer, soldier, legislator, and jurist. His judicial career included 28 years service on the Ohio Supreme Court, 21 years of them as Chief Justice. (Some sources erroneously give his date of death as March 4, 1854.) Early life, education and family Peter Hitchcock was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, the youngest son of Valentine Hitchcock (1741–1809) and Sarah Hotchkiss (1743–1802). His father was a tailor and landowner. Peter taught in a district school during the winter and worked on a farm in the summer to earn the money for his education. He entered college in the sophomore year, pursuing classical studies and was graduated from Yale College in 1801. Joseph Vance (Ohio Politician)
Joseph Vance (March 21, 1786 – August 24, 1852) was a Whig politician from the U.S. state of Ohio. He was the 13th governor of Ohio and the first Whig to hold the position. Biography Vance was born in Catfish (now Washington), Pennsylvania. He moved with his father, Joseph C. Vance, a Revolutionary War veteran, to Vanceburg, Kentucky, in 1788, and then to Urbana, Ohio, in 1805. Vance married Mary Lemon in 1807. Career A salt farmer, Vance gained a commission during the War of 1812 and rose quickly from Major to Major General. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1812–1813, 1815–1816 and 1818–1819. Elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1820, Vance served seven terms before losing a bid for an eighth term in 1834. Vance ran for governor in 1836 and served a single two-year term, losing a bid for re-election in 1838. Samuel Herrick (politician)
Samuel Herrick (April 14, 1779 – June 4, 1852) was a United States Representative from Ohio. Born in Amenia, New York, Herrick pursued an academic course. He studied law in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was admitted to the bar in 1805 and commenced practice in St. Clairsville, Ohio. He moved to Zanesville, Ohio, in 1810. He was appointed prosecuting attorney of Guernsey County in 1810 and also United States district attorney. In 1814 he was appointed prosecuting attorney of Licking County and commissioned brigadier general of the Ohio Militia. Herrick was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fifteenth Congress and reelected to the Sixteenth Congress (March 4, 1817 – March 3, 1821). He served as chairman of the Committee on Private Land Claims (Fifteenth Congress). Herrick was not a candidate for reelection in 1820. He continued the practice of law. Henry Brush
Henry Brush (February 12, 1777January 19, 1855) was a lawyer, soldier, legislator and farmer. Early life and legal career Henry Brush was born in Dutchess County, New York in 1777, the youngest son of Lemuel and Mary (Per Lee) Brush. Henry completed preparatory studies and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1803 and commenced practice in Chillicothe, Ohio. For a time, he was in partnership with his brother, Platt Brush. He married Frances and seems to have had several daughters. Another source says he never married. Henry was described by contemporaries as a tall, thin man with a Roman nose and a highly nervous temperament. In December 1805, Henry Brush testified with other lawyers before the Ohio Senate in the impeachment trial of Judge William W. Irvin, a circuit rider who had missed a number of courts held within his circuit. Irwin was removed from office.
