Caps (party)
The Caps ( sv, mössorna) were a political faction during the Age of Liberty (1719–1772) in Sweden. The primary rivals of the Caps were known as the Hats. The Hats are actually responsible for the Caps' name, as it comes from a contraction of Night-cap, a name used to suggest that the Caps were the soft and timid party. The Caps represented mostly peasants and clergymen. Policy The foremost representative of the Age of Liberty, ''de facto'' leader of government and of the Caps from 1719 to 1738 was the Chancery President, Count Arvid Horn. Horn reversed the traditional policy of Hats and Sweden by keeping the Kingdom of France at a distance and drawing near to Russia. Thus a twenty years' war was succeeded by a twenty years' peace, during which the nation recovered so rapidly from its wounds that it began to forget them. Catharina Wallenstedt, née ''Wallia'' (1627 – 1719) was a Swedish letter writer and courtier. She is known for her collection of letters. Composed of a collection of about 350 letters written between 1673 and 1718, mostly to her spouse and daughter Greta, they have been the object of research.Eva Österberg, red (1997). Christina Nyman
Christina Nyman known as Madam Nyman (1719–1795) was a Swedish brewer. She was a major figure in contemporary Stockholm business life and known as a benefactor of culture. Charlotta "Lotta" Fredrika Sparre (1719 – 20 December 1795, Stockholm), commonly named Lotta Sparre, was a Swedish noble and courtier. Life Early life Lotta Sparre was the daughter of Baron Fredrik Henrik Sparre and Virginia Christina Lilliehöök af Fårdala. She was introduced at court at the age of twelve, where she was appointed ''hovfröken'' (maid-of-honor) to queen Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden. Her beauty made her famous at the royal French court at Versailles, where she was known as “la charmante rose” when she stayed in France from 1739 to 1742 with her relative Ulla Sparre, the wife of Count Carl Gustaf Tessin. She also followed Tessin to Berlin, where Prince Augustus William of Prussia is reported to have fallen in love with her. Petter Stenborg (1719 – 6 November 1781) was a Swedish stage actor and theater director. He was the director of the Stenborg Company or ''Svenska Comoedi-truppen'' from 1758 onward and as such the director of the '' Humlegårdsteatern'' (1773–80) in Stockholm. Petter Stenborg played an important role in Swedish theater history: he was a member of the pioneer actors of the first Swedish national stage in ''Bollhuset'', and as the leader of the Stenborg theatre company, one of only two professional Swedish language theater companies active in the mid 18th-century, he kept professional Swedish language theater alive from the closure of the public theater in ''Bollhuset'' in 1754, until the inauguration of the Royal Swedish Opera (1773) and Royal Dramatic Theatre (1788). 250px, Fredrik Axel von Fersen Count Fredrik Axel von Fersen (5 April 171924 April 1794) was a Swedish statesman and soldier. He served as Lord Marshal of the Riksdag of the Estates, and although he worked closely with King Gustav III before and through the Revolution of 1772, he later opposed the king. Biography A son of Lieutenant-General Hans Reinhold von Fersen, he entered the Swedish Life Guards in 1740, and from 1743 to 1748 was in the French service in the Royal-Suedois, where he rose to the rank of brigadier. In the Seven Years' War Fersen distinguished himself during the operations round Usedom and Wollin in 1759, when he inflicted serious loss on the Prussians. But it is as a politician that he is best known. A member of the Hat party, at the Riksdag of 1755–1756, he was elected Lord Marshal and served three non-consecutive terms in that post before the Revolution of 1772.
