Christen Friis
Christen Friis (1581–1639) was a Danish nobleman, politician, and patron of arts and science. He was a son of Jørgen Friis and Else Bjørn, and a nephew of Johan Friis, from whom he inherited Borreby Castle. He inherited the manor of Kragerup in 1610. He bought Lindholm manor in 1633. Christen Friis was Chancellor of Denmark from 1616. Friis was an opponent of the continuation of the Kalmar War and advocated peace measures to Christian IV of Denmark. He was a patron of the astronomer Christen Sørensen Longomontanus and the historians Johannes Pontanus and Johannes Meursius, and a friend of the natural historian Ole Worm Ole Worm (13 May 1588 – 31 August 1654), who often went by the Latinized form of his name Olaus Wormius, was a Danish physician, natural historian and antiquary. Joachim Burser
Joachim Burser (1583 - 28 August 1639) was a German-Danish botanist, physician and pharmacist. He was professor of medicine and physics at Soro Academy from 1625 and owned Sorø Pharmacy from its reopening in 1639. Biography Burser was born in Camentz, Lausitz. He studied medicine and botany at several universities, including Basel where he studied under Caspar Bauhin. He then practiced as a physician in Annaberg-Buchholz, Annaberg, Saxony. He moved to Denmark in 1625 when he was offered a position as professor in medicine and botany at the new Sorø Academy. In January 1639 he was also awarded a royal license to open a pharmacy in Sorø. Legacy Burser is mainly remembered for his contributions as a botanist. He left a herbarium in 25 volumes. Corfitz Ulfeldt brought it with him to Sweden where it is now kept in Uppsala University's Museum of Botany. Burser's Pharmacy Garden has been recreated at Sorø Museum. Hans Van Steenwinckel The Younger
Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger (24 June 1587 – 6 August 1639) was a Flemish-Danish architect who specialised in the Dutch Renaissance style, typical of prestigious Danish buildings from the first half of the 17th century. Along with his brother Lorenz van Steenwinckel he was responsible for most of King Christian IV's many ambitious building projects. He was the son of Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder and the father of Hans van Steenwinckel the Youngest and probably also the building master and engineer Oluf van Steenwinckel. Career Hans and Lorenz van Steenwinckel were sons of the prime contractor and stonecutter Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder who was originally from Antwerp but had come to Denmark in 1576 to work on Kronborg Castle and subsequently became the preferred architect of Frederick II. Albret Skeel
Albret Skeel (23 November 1572 – 9 April 1639) was a Denmark, Danish nobleman who held the office of Admiral of the Realm from 1616 to 1623. Early life and travels The son of Privy Councillor Christian Skeel, Albret Skeel was born at Fussingø on 23 November 1572. He attended Viborg School from the age of 9 and until 1585 when he was sent abroad to further his education, studying in Strasbourg, Padova and Siena before returning home by way of France and England. Back in Denmark, Skeel was appointed squire at King Christian IV of Denmark, Christian IV's court. In 1597 he escorted the king on his journey to Brandenburg to marry Anne Catherine of Brandenburg, and the following year the king's brother, Duke Ulrik, on a journey to France, England and Scotland. Princess Augusta of Denmark (8 April 1580 – 5 February 1639) was the Duchess of Holstein-Gottorp as the wife of Duke John Adolf. She was the third daughter of King Frederick II of Denmark and Sophia of Mecklenburg-Güstrow. She was politically influential during the reign of her son, Duke Frederick III. Christian IV (12 April 1577 – 28 February 1648) was King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Holstein and Schleswig from 1588 until his death in 1648. His reign of 59 years, 330 days is the longest of Danish monarchs and Scandinavian monarchies.
