Al Hurricane
Alberto Nelson Sanchez (July 10, 1936 – October 22, 2017), known professionally as Al Hurricane, was an American singer-songwriter, dubbed "The Godfather" of New Mexico music. He released more than thirty albums, and is best known for his contributions to New Mexico's unique style of Spanish music. He received his nickname, Hurricane, from his mother. As a child, he would accidentally knock things over; the nickname became synonymous with his band, studio, and a recording label. His signature look, which included an eye-patch, was due to an automobile accident that occurred during the 1960s. These things, as well as his performance style, led to Hurricane being known for his ability to improvise and adapt. They have also led to his music and image being ultimately entangled with the history of New Mexico music. New Mexico Music
New Mexico music ( es, música nuevo mexicana) is a genre of music that originated in the US state of New Mexico, it derives from Pueblo music in the 13th century, and with the folk music of Hispanos during the 16th to 19th centuries in Santa Fe de Nuevo México. The style went through several changes during pre-statehood, mostly during the developments of Mexican folk and cowboy Western music. During the early 1900s, country music and American folk music began to become incorporated into the genre. The 1950s and 1960s brought the influences of blues, jazz, rockabilly, and rock and roll into New Mexico music. During the 1970s, the music style entered popular music in the Southwestern United States. Bandido (supergroup)
Bandido were a New Mexico music supergroup that released several albums during the 1980s. They released three studio albums, and a compilation album. All of their releases charted along the west coast, Chicago, and internationally in Germany, Venezuela, and Spain. Their frontman Al Hurricane, as well as his son Al Hurricane, Jr., spoke fondly of their time with the band but reiterated their desire to return to their New Mexico music audience; as they felt that Bandido's sound was more akin to Latin music. The three Bandido albums comprise Al Hurricane's twelfth, fourteenth, and fifteenth albums. New Mexico is a state of the Southwest United States. The state has music traditions dating back to the ancient Anasazi and Pueblo people, Navajo, Apache, and the Spanish Santa Fe de Nuevo México; these old traditions are found in both their original folk forms and as a modern folk genre known as New Mexico music.
