14th Regiment Alabama Infantry
The 14th Alabama Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Service The 14th Alabama Infantry Regiment was mustered in at Richmond, Virginia, on August 1, 1861. Wilcox's Brigade website During one of the first battles that the 14th fought in, at Glendale, the unit was sent in as a vanguard against Union positions and suffered considerable casualties. The regiment surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Total strength and casualties The 14th mustered 1,317 men during its existence. It suffered approximately 250 killed in action or mortally wounded and 350 men who died of disease, for a total of approximately 600 fatalities. An additional 159 men were discharged or transferred from the regiment. The current flag of Alabama (the second in Alabama state history) was adopted by Act 383 of the Alabama state legislature on February 16, 1895: The cross of St. Andrew referred to in the law is a diagonal cross, known in vexillology as a saltire. Because the bars must be at least wide, small representations of the Alabama flag do not meet the legal definition. Alabama In The American Civil War
Alabama was central to the Civil War, with the secession convention at Montgomery, birthplace of the Confederacy, inviting other states to form a Southern Republic, during January–March 1861, and develop constitutions to legally run their own affairs. The 1861 Alabama Constitution granted citizenship to current U.S. residents, but prohibited import duties (tariffs) on foreign goods, limited a standing military, and as a final issue, opposed emancipation by any nation, but urged protection of African slaves, with trial by jury, and reserved the power to regulate or prohibit the African slave trade. The secession convention invited all slaveholding states to secede, but only 7 Cotton States of the Lower South formed the Confederacy with Alabama, while the majority of slave states were in the Union. Appomattox Court House National Historical Park
The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is a preserved 19th-century village in Appomattox County, Virginia. The village is famous for the site of the Battle of Appomattox Court House, and contains the house of Wilmer McLean, where the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee to Union commander Ulysses S. Grant took place on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the American Civil War. The McLean House was the site of the surrender conference, but the village itself was named for the presence nearby of what is now preserved as the Old Appomattox Court House. The park was established in 1935. The village was made a national monument in 1940 and a national historical park in 1954. American Civil War
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States.
