13th Vermont Infantry
The 13th Vermont Infantry Regiment was a nine months' infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It served in the eastern theater, predominantly in the Defenses of Washington, from October 1862 to August 1863. It was a member of the 2nd Vermont Brigade. History The 13th Vermont Infantry was raised as a result of President Lincoln's call on August 4, 1862, for additional troops due to the disastrous results of the Peninsula Campaign. East Montpelier () is a town in Washington County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,598 at the 2020 census. History East Montpelier became a town in 1859. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 32.1 square miles (83.1 km2), of which 32.0 square miles (82.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.3 km2) (0.34%) is water. James Stevens Peck
James Stevens Peck (December 6, 1838 – May 28, 1884) was a Vermont attorney and military leader who served in the 13th and 17th Vermont Infantry Regiments during the American Civil War and as Adjutant General of the Vermont National Guard. Early life James S. Peck was born in Montpelier, Vermont, on December 6, 1838. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1860, and studied law with Lucius Benedict Peck and Stoddard B. Colby. Civil War In 1862 Peck was commissioned a second lieutenant in Company I, 13th Vermont Infantry. He rose to the post of regimental adjutant, and took part in the regiment's combat actions, including the Battle of Gettysburg. After the 13th Vermont was mustered out, Peck joined the 17th Vermont as adjutant with the rank of major. He was commended for bravery at Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg, and mustered out with the regiment in 1865. The 1st Vermont Infantry Regiment was a three months' infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It served in the eastern theater, in and around Fortress Monroe, Virginia. History Responding to President Abraham Lincoln's call in mid-April 1861, for 75,000 men to serve for three months to help put down the rebellion, Governor Erastus Fairbanks ordered the recruitment of the regiment. The 2nd Vermont Infantry Regiment was a three years' infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It served in the eastern theater, predominantly in the VI Corps, Army of the Potomac, from June 1861 to July 1865. It was a member of the famous Vermont Brigade. History In July 1861, the United States Congress authorized President Abraham Lincoln to call out 500,000 men, to serve for three years unless sooner discharged. The 2nd Vermont Infantry was the first of the three years regiments from the state placed in the field as a result of this call, and it served longer in the service than all but one other Vermont unit, the 7th Vermont Infantry. Highgate is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. The population was 3,472 at the 2020 census. The town is on the Canada–US border and is a border town with Philipsburg, Quebec. History Highgate was named after Highgate in England. The Grateful Dead played two shows in Highgate at the Franklin County State Airport in July 1994 and June 1995. Geography Bakersfield is located in southeastern Franklin County, bordered by Lamoille County to the southeast.
