Matieu De Caersi
Matieu de Caersi, Caerci, or Querci was a troubadour from the Quercy. According to the rubric accompanying his only song in troubadour manuscript ''C'',A 14th-century manuscript from Occitania, now filed as BN f.f. 856 in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris. he was ''Mayestre Matieus de Caersi'', that is, a Master of Arts from Quercy, possibly Cahors. He is not to be identified with the Matheus who composed a ''tenso'' with Bertram de Gordon in 1212. Matieu's lone surviving song is ' ("I am so afflicted that I cannot be happy"), a ''planh'' on the death of James I of Aragon (died 26 August 1276). It is often compared and contrasted with another ''planh'' on James' death composed by Cerverí de Girona, ''Si per tristor, per dol no per cossir''. Cerverí's piece is direct and almost personal, as the troubadour asks the Virgin Mary to show as much mercy to James as he showed on earth, referring to his establishing the Mercedarian Order in Barcelona. James I the Conqueror ( es, Jaime el Conquistador, ca, Jaume el Conqueridor; 2 February 1208 – 27 July 1276) was King of Aragon and Lord of Montpellier from 1213 to 1276; King of Majorca from 1231 to 1276; and Valencia from 1238 to 1276 and Count of Barcelona. Cerverí De Girona
Cerverí de Girona (; fl. 1259 – 1285) was a Catalan troubadour born Guillem de Cervera in Girona. He was the most prolific troubadour, leaving behind some 114 lyric poems among other works, including an ''ensenhamen'' of proverbs for his son, totaling about 130. He was a court poet to James the Conqueror and Peter the Great. He wrote ''pastorelas'' and ''sirventes'' and his overriding concern was the complexities of court life. None of his music survives. Cerverí spent some time under the patronage and at the court of Hugh IV and Henry II of Rodez. He was in Spain in 1269, for he is found that year in the entourage of the then-''infante'' Peter the Great. With fellow troubadours Folquet de Lunel and Dalfinet he accompanied Peter to Toledo. On 26 April at Riello, near Cuenca, he received one ''solidus'' for his services. Guiraut Riquier
Guiraut Riquier de Narbona ( 1230 in Narbonne – 1292 in Narbonne or Rodez) is among the last of the Occitan troubadours. He is well known because of his great care in writing out his works and keeping them together—the New Grove Encyclopedia considers him an "anthologist" of his own works. He served under Aimery IV, Viscount of Narbonne,Elizabeth Aubrey, ''The Music of the Troubadours'', (Indiana University Press, 1996), 24. as well as Alfonso el Sabio, King of Castile. He is also believed to have worked under Henry II, Count of Rodez. Pastorela
The ''pastorela'' (, "little/young shepherdess") was an Occitan lyric genre used by the troubadours. It gave rise to the Old French ''pastourelle''. The central topic was always the meeting of a knight with a shepherdess, which could lead to any of a number of possible conclusions. They were usually humorous pieces. The genre was allegedly invented by Cercamon, whose examples do not survive, and was most famously taken up by his (alleged) pupil Marcabru Marcabru (; floruit, fl. 1130–1150) is one of the earliest troubadours whose poems are known. Guido Guinizelli
Guido Guinizelli (ca. 1225–1276) was an esteemed Italian love poet and is considered the "father" of the Dolce Stil Novo. He was the first to write in this new style of poetry writing, and thus is held to be the ''ipso facto'' founder. He was born in, and later exiled from, Bologna, Italy. It is speculated that he died in Verona, Italy. Poetry Guinizelli's poetry can be briefly described as a conciliation between divine and earthly love with deep psychological introspection. Dolce Stil Novo
''Dolce Stil Novo'' (), Italian for "sweet new style," is the name given to a literary movement in 13th and 14th century Italy. Influenced by the Sicilian School and Tuscan poetry, its main theme is Divine Love. The name ''Dolce Stil Novo'' was used for the first time by Dante Alighieri in ''Purgatorio'', the second canticle of the ''Divina Commedia''. In the ''Divina Commedia'' Purgatory he meets Bonagiunta Orbicciani, a 13th-century Italian poet, who tells Dante that Dante himself, Guido Guinizelli, and Guido Cavalcanti had been able to create a new genre: a ''stil novo''. Poetry from this school is marked by adoration of the human form, incorporating vivid descriptions of female beauty and frequently comparing the desired woman to a creature from paradise.
