100 Jahre – Der Countdown
''100 Jahre – Der Countdown'' (English - ''100 Years - The Countdown'') is a German documentary television series produced by Zolcer TV. It was first broadcast in 1999 on ZDF. The host of the series is Guido Knopp. Most of the 100 episodes focus on a single event in a given year. The total length of the series is about 16 hours. The series was first broadcast on the last 100 days of 1999, one episode after the daily news cast . Since New Year's Eve 1999 the full length of "100 Jahre" is broadcast several times a year by Phoenix. Structure Each of the ten-minute episodes begins with a title. It first shows the Earth from space. As earth comes closer into view, the series title track plays along with historic recordings. Guido Knopp
Guido Knopp (born 29 January 1948 in Treysa, Hesse) is a German journalist and author. He is well known in Germany, mainly because he has produced a great number of TV documentaries, predominantly about the "Third Reich" and National Socialism, but also about other topics, such as Stalinism. Life and work After earning his doctoral degree in history and political science, Knopp worked as a newspaper editor at the Welt am Sonntag and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. In 1978 he took up employment at the German TV station ZDF. Since then, he has produced many documentaries about the Nazi dictatorship like ''Hitlers Helfer'' ("Hitler's Henchmen"), ''Hitler-Eine Bilanz'' ("Hitler-taking stock") or ''Die SS: Eine Warnung der Geschichte'' ("The SS: A warning from history"), but also, for example, ''Vatikan'' (about the power of the popes) or ''Kanzler: Die Mächtigen der Republik'' (about Germany's post-war federal chancellors). The term ''Kniefall von Warschau'', also referred to as ''Warschauer Kniefall'' (both German for "Warsaw genuflection"), refers to West German Chancellor Willy Brandt kneeling and giving a moment of silence during a visit to a Warsaw Ghetto Uprising memorial in 1970. Incident The event took place on December 7, 1970, in Warsaw, Poland (which was then part of the Eastern Bloc), during a visit to a monument to the German occupation-era Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. After laying a wreath, Brandt unexpectedly, and apparently spontaneously, knelt. He remained silently in that position for a short time (half a minute), surrounded by a large group of dignitaries and press photographers. Brandt had actively resisted the early Nazi regime, and had spent most of the time of Hitler's reign in exile.
