The 1st Saturn Awards were awarded to media properties and personalities deemed by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films to be the best in Science fiction film, science fiction, Fantasy film, fantasy and Horror film, horror released in the year 1972. However, only science fiction and horror were awarded this year, while fantasy would be awarded 2nd Saturn Awards, the following ceremony onward. The inaugural ceremony took place on May 18, 1973. The Saturn Awards for Best Horror Film is an award presented to the best film in the horror genre by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. It was introduced in 1973 for the 1972 film year. ''Blacula'' is a 1972 American blaxploitation horror film directed by William Crain.
