Long Jump
The long jump is a track and field event in which athletes combine speed, strength and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a takeoff point. Along with the triple jump, the two events that measure jumping for distance as a group are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". This event has a history in the ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympic event for men since the first Olympics in 1896 and for women since 1948. Rules At the elite level, competitors run down a runway (usually coated with the same rubberized surface as running tracks, crumb rubber or vulcanized rubber, known generally as an all-weather track) and jump as far as they can from a wooden or synthetic board, 20 centimetres or 8 inches wide, that is built flush with the runway, into a pit filled with soft damp sand. Erica Johansson
Erica Johansson (born February 5, 1974) is a Swedish former athlete who specialized in the long jump. She is the 1992 World Junior Champion, the 1993 European Junior Champion, and the 2000 European Indoor Champion. She also competed at the 2000 Olympic Games. Career Born in Landvetter, Härryda Municipality, Johansson was a promising junior who equalled the Swedish record as a 15-year-old with 6.50 meters, to win European Junior silver in 1989. A year later, she won the silver medal at the 1990 World Junior Championships, jumping 6.50 again. She yet again jumped 6.50 when finishing fourth at the 1991 European Junior Championships, missing out on the bronze medal to Iva Prandzheva on countback. Lyudmila Ivanovna Galkina (russian: Людмила Ивановна Галкина; born January 20, 1972 in Saratov) is a Russian track and field athlete. She won the European Junior Championships in 1991 as a triple jumper, but thereafter later focused on the long jump. Chioma Ajunwa
Chioma Ajunwa-Opara, MON, OLY (born 25 December 1970) – also known as Chioma Ajunwa – is a Nigerian former track and field athlete and football player, notable for becoming the first Nigerian to win gold at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in a field event. A member of the Nigerian Police Force, Ajunwa remains only woman to compete at both the FIFA Women's World Cup as a footballer and the Olympics as a track and field athlete. In December 2017, Ajunwa launched the Chioma Ajunwa-Okpara Foundation to discover new Nigerian stars in sports. Heike Drechsler
Heike Gabriela Drechsler (; ; born 16 December 1964) is a German former track and field athlete who represented East Germany and later Germany. One of the most successful long jumpers of all-time, she is a former world record holder and ranks third on the all-time list with her legal best of 7.48 metres in 1988. Her marginally wind-assisted jump of 7.63 metres (+2.1) in 1992 at altitude in Sestriere, is still the furthest a woman has ever long jumped. She is the only woman who has won two Olympic gold medals in the long jump, winning in 1992 and 2000. Luciana Alves dos Santos (born 10 February 1970) is a Brazilian long jumper, triple jumper and sprinter. She was born in Ilhéus. She competed in the long jump at the World Championships in 1997 and 1999, and in both events at the 2000 Summer Olympics, but without reaching the final. Elena Bobrovskaya (born 11 April 1975) is a retired Kyrgyzstani athlete who specialized in the 100 metres and long jump. As a sprinter she competed at the World Indoor Championships in 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2004 as well as the 2004 Olympic Games, but without reaching the final. Jacqueline Lois Elizabeth Edwards (born 14 April 1971 in Falmouth, Trelawny Parish) is a Bahamian long jumper, who was born in Jamaica. Career Edwards attended Queen's College High School in Nassau, Bahamas and graduated in 1987. She graduated from Stanford University in 1992.
